Darkest comedy of all time comes to Playlovers!
Wed, 17 Mar 2010, 08:20 pmPlaylovers in Floreat is going dark this March – and it’s not through a lack of lighting.
Staging the award-winning The Pillowman by Martin McDonagh, directed by Matt Longman, Playlovers is embracing what has been called “the darkest comedy of all time”.
The play focuses on a writer who is being interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories and their similarities to a series of child murders. It's set in a police state and is an urgent work of theatre, which gives an unflinching examination of the nature and purpose of art and its potential effect on people.
The Pillowman received the 2004 Olivier Award for Best New Play, 2004-5 New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best New Foreign Play and two Tony Awards for production.
Among the talented cast assembled for the Playlovers production are Michael Hodgen, Phil Barnett, David Bowyer, David Young, Marie Corrigan, Rodney Worth, Jessica Mews and Callum Fletcher.
The Pillowman examines weighty questions such as the nature versus nurture debate on becoming an artist, the power of the written word influencing a reader’s actions and motivations and what makes a so-called good story. It's an unsettling play and not for the faint-of-heart - but it’s certainly a rewarding one that will leave people talking for long afterwards.
The Pillowman plays at 8pm, March 18, 19, 20, 25, 26 and 27 and 7pm March 21. Tickets are $17, $15 concession – book on 0415 777 173 or through BOCS on 9484 1133.
Playlovers is located at Hackett Hall, Draper Street (off Underwood Avenue), Floreat.

Dear All
What a great show.. congratulations to Matt Longman for choosing this wonderful play and diecting it. Where on earth did you find it. Brilliant. It is very rare that a director risks a play such as ' The Pillowman '. Congratulations to the theatre company for staging the production and allowing the show to be produced. Extremely dark. Congratulations to all involved.
