RSC strike set for 15th

Members of BECTU at the Royal Shakespeare Company will strike on
15th September in protest at the job cuts which are part of the
proposed reorganisation of the company, announced in May. Under the
proposals up to sixty jobs in Stratford and 85 in London may go. On
30th August 90% of the union's membership voted for strike action.

The strike is supported by Professor Peter Holland, one of the RSC's
governors, who is also opposed to the proposed changes. He feels that
the strike will raise public awareness of what the company will lose
through the reorganisation.

BECTU is the union to which the lighting and sound crew belong. The action is also supported by the actors whose conditions have also been affected.

RE: FYI: RSC strike set for 15th

Good for them!
A hard call, but the only real avenue performers have to stand up against exploitation is the threat to strike and withhold their labour.
In an industry where jobs are scarce and labour cheap and plentiful (how many of us are happy to volunteer our services for free?!) it's difficult to organise any type of strike action.

If it ever comes to that here, I would hope that all union members will stand together for our industry, and those who are not members will respect the situation and support them by not accepting work in their stead, or any offers below minimum award standard. (Better still, join them!)

Cheers,
