Writing and Dramaturgy wages?
Thu, 14 May 2009, 08:48 pmDear Reader,
I am currently doing out an assignment for my acting studies, and need some help. We are filling out grant applications - and I've run into some trouble with the costs of directors/dramaturgs and writers!
Since there is no pre-defined minimum wage (as far as I can find) - I was wondering if anybody would be willing to share either what they charge, or what they have been charged in the past? This way I can average them out, and find a happy medium.
Any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks and Godspeed,
-Th3o.

I recommend checking out competitive pricings amongsts writers, editors, proofreaders, etc. Dramaturgs would probably come under that heading and are easier to research (do a google for writing organisations in Australia, like the Vic. Writers Centre, and then see what their members charge for their services. People generally charge upwards of $25 per hour for editing/proofreading/etc if I remember right). Playwrights usually get royalties (and fees sometimes, especially if it's a commissioned play). I'm not sure about directors, but that might be covered at MEAA (www.alliance.org.au), the Australian union for performing artists; try checking their pdf files for technical roles in theatre. They also are the union for much of the journalistic/publishing areas too, so they're worth a look anyway.
Unfortunately, due to the huge number of variables of producing shows, you won't find many stats on the net for fees/royalties/etc, seeing as how it also depends on the structure of your organisation (amateur, incorporated, profit-share, professional... and all the grey areas in between). People also charge fees differently depending on a whole bunch of personal reasons too.
Good luck with the assignment!
