Ngalang Koolark (Translation Our Home) January 26 Australia Day Concert 2009 The City of Perth invites all Western Australians to the Supreme Court Gardens on Australia Day to experience Ngalang Koolark, an Aboriginal Concert celebrating our nation's history and culture. The name of the festival translates to 'Our Home', and this welcoming theme is strongly represented in the activities and entertainment taking place throughout the day. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists will perform music across a range of genres including hip hop, soul, reggae, contemporary, funk and traditional Aboriginal dance. Ngalang Koolark will also offer a launch pad for one talented artist or band as the day commences with a competition to discover an act to play on the bill at the 2009 Perth Good Vibrations Festival. The competition is open to Indigenous bands/artists who are 18+, and play music in the style of Hip Hop / Funk & Groove. Bands that enter must be able to play a half hour set at Good Vibrations and have up to 3 songs ready for the competition. Ngalang Koolark will finish with a performance by Noongar chanteuse Gina Williams who has been described as having 'an angel's voice, a poet's heart' - an uplifting way to prepare for the 25th Anniversary Skyworks. Ngalang Koolark is an alcohol and drug free event – the event organisers encourage people to bring the family, a hat and a rug to enjoy the day in the beautiful surrounds of the Supreme Court Gardens. The City of Perth hopes you will enjoy this very special Aboriginal event and embrace the spirit of community, cooperation and inclusion this Australia Day!
