Hello fellow and other worldly thespians, I'm a Canadian actor that has been intriqued by Australia for quite a long time. Everything that I hear about Australia is fantastic. Living, the landscape, temperature, the people. So I wanted to ask you guys how is the work in the film and theatre industry? I heard that it was really vibrant? Is that true? At the moment I am between agents, but that being said I am mainly interested is independent films. Any thoughts or your take on what the over all community is like would be appreciated. and thank you in advance.

You might want to read this: http://www.theatre.asn.au/book_page/coming_from_overseas_where_to_start As for the industry here... well, it's not that great. Finding work is tough. Though there's plenty to be involved with here, you'll find competition is high for paid work. The link above will give more info. Round head foam puppet pattern at Puppets in Melbourne

Question

To play Devil's Advocate, I'd question the statement 'As for the industry here... well, it's not that great.'

I'd say it's about as good / bad as anywhere else. Sure it's not London or Las Vegas, but I feel that no matter where you go, if you know where to look, you can always find the culture, and that the opportunities are there. This also means that the competition is there also.

Melbourne is considered by most as the Cultural Centre of Australia yet I would be tempted to say that other capitals are making good headway to challenge Melb. For example, a recent flood of government Funding has seen a swelling in Perth Film, TV and Theatre, both in terms of activity and awareness.

It depends very much on your point of view, as everything does. I personally feel that the industry is very much alive and thriving, even given the current economical climate.

True, the industry is

True, the industry is better than I make it sound. I merely meant that if you're coming here from overseas and expecting it to be easy to find paid work, then you're competing with a lot of Aussie talent and very little work to go around. More so than in the UK or US. Round head foam puppet pattern at Puppets in Melbourne

Don't forget

You would also need to ensure that you had the appropriate visa for Australia if you intended to look for paid work. You cannot work on any form of tourist visa. Check out www.immi.gov.au for Australian Immigration regulations.

Terrible

It's bloody awful here - stay away! Might be worth investigating some paid acting gigs on Rodnest Island
