RE: Once on this Island
Hi Tom,
I have a recording and the music in "Once on this Island" (Book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty) is fabulous.
Here's a bit of info I got off the net:
"Based on the novel "My Love, My Love" by Rosa Guy
Once on this Island, a Caribbean retelling of Hans Christian Anderson's "The Little Mermaid," is a colorful musical tale of love, loss and redemption performed by a group of Caribbean peasants as they wait out a violent storm. The story they tell is of a young peasant girl, Ti Moune, who leaves her village in search of her lover, sent on a journey by the gods of her island to test the ultimate strength of her love. It is the peasants' version of what became of her, filtered through their faith and their imaginations".
I'm not sure if the show would work without the Caribbean cast but that might be something to look into. Check out the site that I got this info from if you want to know more:

Cheers,
