Englishman abroad
Tue, 24 Apr 2001, 05:21 pmHi
I am English, & have just completed a 3 yr acting course in London (East 15 Acting School), and am considering spending a year or so in Australia doing acting/theatre work, once I have had a little more experience here. I am ignorant of the theatre scene in Australia, & would really appreciate pointers towards getting answeres to these questions:
What demand is there for English actors in Australia?
Sydney vs Melbourne theatre scene- which is most vibrant?
How important is having an agent there (compared to , say, London)?
What web sites can I use to start making contacts/apply for work before I go over there?
How much work is there at the moment & if so, what kinds and where is it?!!
Maybe everybody wants an answer to the last one...Hope you can help!
James

RE: Englishman abroad
Hey James,
I'll do my best to help you out a little!
What demand is there for English actors in Australia?
I guess you being English would be an advantage if a particular role required an authentic English accent but apart from that I can't see that it would be particularly to your advantage.
Sydney vs Melbourne theatre scene- which is most vibrant?
I may be a little biased because I have lived there and loved it but I think Melbourne. It seems as though there is always something going on in the arts over there.
How important is having an agent there (compared to , say, London)?
Very important. You don't hear about many of the auditions if you don't have one.
What web sites can I use to start making contacts/apply for work before I go over there?
Sorry. I don't know of any Oz sites which are equivalent to England's "The Stage" website (as far as looking for work in the performing arts is concerned). If you find out about one I'd love to know about it too!
How much work is there at the moment & if so, what kinds and where is it?!!
This always changes. Friends of mine over East are constantly moving back and forth between Vic and NSW (and sometimes Qld - they make alot of movies there) for work.
Good luck and have fun!
