"The professional theatre profile has shrunk while the amateur has blossomed," he [Dean of WAAPA, Duncan Ord] says. "I think itÂ’s sad that public respect for actors is less than for sports people. There is no difference in being gifted as a painter, an actor or an athlete."

Duncan says the present standards of some amateur theatre groups often match those of professional productions.

"The number of people coming into WAAPA (Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts) from amateur dramatics is enormous," Duncan says.

"There has always been a cross-over; people donÂ’t notice it. Jenny and Bernie Davies started as amateurs, so did Greg and Sarah McNeill."
