So writes Timothy (Kafka Dances) Daly in this article in the Sydney Morning Herald.

"Let's be brutally frank: in the main, our theatre audiences are pleasant, well-mannered, not very knowledgeable, intellectually undemanding, slightly imaginative, and with a very strong comfort zone. A former artistic director of Sydney Theatre Company once complained that his subscribers "only care about having comfortable seats and good coffee""

Check it out.

RE: Audiences .. not needed??

"Forget the audience....and they will always forget you"

Are these guys so far up themselves - they have lost the reason why they are here? The amount of so called stars who have become bigger than thier audiance and life it's self, who have been flushed down the bog that I have seen and worked with over the past few life times (that probably includes me to a small extent) who have not learned from others and history or those who have gone before - amazes me. But like all cycvles they keep popping back up to the top regularly.

Why don't they stay home and DO IT in front of a mirror.

Joe, with all due respect can I suggest you actually read the article being discussed.

Timothy Daly presents a well reasoned argument that should give all serious theatre practitioners considerable pause for thought.

This site would make an excellent forum for arguing some of the issues he raises. Particularly as community theatre is to a large extent the breeding ground for potential audiences and theatre practitioners.

RE: Audiences .. not needed??

Sorry - I got the wrong end of the thingy again - But, after having first read the article, I beleived Grant's posting was the part of the topic, not the authors article as a whole - my mistake.

As this type of theatrical comments raise my dander - no matter who says it, I usually go off on a tangent with plastic milk crate in hand.

However, from the whole articles pionts raised, this guy has finally put into words, what should have been said a long time a go - This is not only here but on the other side of this big ball.
It is just as relevent when you read about famous actors chastising audiances during performances, because they have the gaul to cough or open thier bag of crisps at the wrong time.

Anyway please forget I responded in the first place - next time I will wait untill someone else responds, so as to ensure that I am on the right track. I will have to learn how to use my fingers on this key-boeard as my tounge gets stuck occasionally.

Chookas Malcolm - Thanks for setting me straight - I sometimes grab the nettle and only end up with prickles and sore hands (not necta - which is a rare-a-tee?)
