Just thought I'd bring this thread back to the top to remind people it's still an ongoing hot issue!

But seriously folks - a strange & uncharacteristic silence about this topic on the part of the Management of the Kwinana Arts Centre (& the Don Russell Centre), who's been known to lurk around this site in the past; & who recently had occasion to remind us of the traumas & costs inherent in magnanimously undertaking the management of a Community Arts Centre for the greater good of the local populace.

It makes you wonder, doesn't it, when considering the histories of both these Arts Centres & then seeing the current plight of those groups who were originally, according to their local Councils, supposed to be an integral part of those Centres?!!

When a Local Council approaches your group, begging you to participate in their new pet project - be afraid, be very afraid!

RE: KWINANA THEATRE: endangered species??

Comment on the green room gossip published so far seems inappropriate, since the issue is not in my hands.

I think that the debate is a healthy one, though some of the detail is incorrect, it is not apporiate for me, as a venue manager to enter into an arguement between KTW and the Town of Kwinana.

In terms of venue management, about which I am always more than happy to speak, we are repeating last years offer to companies throughout the metropolitan area to bring productions down to Kwinana for a Friday/Saturday night season.

As with last year, we will provide a guarrentee of $500 per season or 50% of the net box office, whichever is greater. The companies provide the show and basic PR material and we will provide the venue and publicity budget.

As mentioned last year by a contributor to the discussion, $500 is not enough to pay for the production of a show, it is however a nice guarrentee for a production which has already had a season in another venue. As a matter of interest, we paid out the minimum $500 on three occassions while the highest payout was $1,446.00 to one company which sold well.

Backstreet Theatre, Blak Yak, Short Fuse, Playlovers and Waiting in the Wings have all produced shows in Kwinana this year and we hope to add to the number of productions and companies presenting programmes in the year 2001.

You may wish to talk with the individuals concerned about the process and how it works, however anacodatally and from the venues perspective, it seems to work well.

I believe at this point that all of these companies intend to repeat the excercise this year.

We hope to attract a Shakespere production and a musical would be nice, as well as the normal range of drama and comedy produced throughout the state. We hope to attract around 13 weeks of programming to the venue.

Please note:::::::::
This programming is in addition to; not instead of KTW, whom have already booked six seasons throughout the year.

Lastly, on the subject of frequenting this site, you may be amazed to learn that all of my managers and staff frequently check the gossip, tech talk, classifieds and reviews on the site, because we find it an invaluable resource of information about our industry.
When appropriate or helpful we are all happy to contribute towards the forum and I hope that our contributions are generally seen as helpful, rather than condescending.

Contrary to most comments posted here, we are attempting to contribute rather than detract from the our community, in which we have an ongoing interest.

Kind regards

Ian Ashton.

RE: KWINANA THEATRE: endangered species??

This is a discussion about the possibility of a popular theatre company losing their home and you, Mr Ashton, have used it as a forum to further your own business interests. Shame on you. How can you think that we would honestly believe that you are looking out for the community when you it is obvious to anyone that you are and always will be a businessman first and foremost. Please do not try and insult our intelligence by suggesting you are anything else.
