After years of playwriting Watsonia resident, Michael Olsen, wants to share his knowledge and experience in a new course at the Watsonia Neighbourhood House, Melbourne, starting October 11. Playwriting for Fun is an 8-week course that offers budding playwrights the chance to learn from one of Diamond ValleyÂ’s leading playwrights.

Olsen says the course is a welcome addition to the range of courses already offered by the Neighbourhood House. “The aim of Playwriting for Fun is to enable those who might not have thought of playwriting to simply jump in and give it a go.”

Having been involved in theatre since writing, producing and directing his first show Cannibals of the Heart in 1993, Olsen has gone on to have his work produced all over the world and won a slew of awards.

“Playwriting, like any creative endeavour, is only a mystery to those who have never ever done it,” he says. “Each week an aspect of playwriting is discussed, and participants get to share their work and offer feedback on the work of others in a constructive and mutually supportive atmosphere.”

The course will cover some of the fundamentals of writing for the stage: characters, conflict, dialogue, plot, actors, directors, the audience and where to send your script when you're finished.

For Olsen, the emphasis is on fun and accessibility. “The aim is to demystify the creative process. The last session will see students' work read by experienced actors, so that participants can finally get a sense of the journey their work takes from the page to the stage.”
