The Vagina Monologues is an annual theatre production performed as part of
the global V-Day campaign. There are performances of The Vagina Monologues
in hundreds of cities all over the world. The aim? To raise awareness and
funds to help prevent domestic abuse and violence.
It's unique structure and often confronting topics are performed by an
all-female ensemble. With candor and respect The Vagina Monologues deals
with subjects such as the vagina, lesbian sex, birth, rape, child abuse and
quite simply everything that encompasses living as a woman.
Through an exploration of emotional and sexual women's issues The Vagina
Monologues creates awareness and empowerment for all women. The play permits
the audience to venture to the unknown land of 'Down There' provoking the
realisation that it is not a foreign country but simply another beautiful
place we should all visit from time to time.
The cast is comprised of 33 women. Patricia Petersen, who has a PhD in
Philosophy of Sex, is a former panellist on Beauty and the Beast, ?Sexpert?
for Radio stations 2UE and B105 and high profile Independent who contested
Tony Abbott?s seat during the 2004 federal election, stars in the show.
A Michael Moore-like audio-visual segment has been included in the show.
Themes include war, refugees and staggering statistics in relation to the
number of Australian women who are sexually or physically abused.
Though there is a serious aspect to the show, the play is generally very
humorous in tone.
