Seeking information about an 'event' that took place on the first night of the Marian Street Theatre (Sydney) production of 84 Charing Cross Road on 2nd April 1983.

I run a website devoted to the history of Marks & Co the shop made famous in the book by Helene Hanff.
More details at
"http://www.84charingcrossroad.co.uk

I am trying to trace a former member of the shop staff who had emmigrated to Australia in the 1950's. She was living in the Mosman area in the early 1980's and was invited to attend the Australian premiere of the play of 84CCR at the Marian Street Theatre.
The actress Elaine Lee remembers her being introduced to the cast.

Her name was Doreen (Maiden name possibly Wellsbury, Wellsberry of even Wells) - her character in the play is named Megan Wells.

Someone must have been aware of Doreen's association with the shop/play and someone must have issued the invitation

If anyone is able to assist me in my quest or knows of any other person or organisation that may be able to help I'd be pleased to hear from them.

Many thanks - steve@maggs.co.uk

Re: Marian Street Theatre - 84 Charing Cross Road

hello there steven

as far as i'm aware, marian street theatre archives were taken over by NIDA(national institute of dramatic arts), and possibly then passed onto the seaborne foundation, based at NIDA. they should have all the records and photos available from marian street. this happened at the close of the theatre.

jennifer hagan, actress and director, at NIDA knows a bit about the place from what i can remember. and if she doesn't she might know someone who does. another person to talk to at NIDA is the history lecturers, ken healey and karen vickery. they are quite genned up about australian theatre history and would be able to point you in the right direction.

another group to approach is the actors benevolent fund of NSW. they can be contacted through the MEAA/Equity located in chalmers st, redfern. the best people to talk to would be michael craig(who acted in england for years) or maggie dence, so perhaps address it to them and they can take it to the committee who meet once a month, made up of some of the stalwarts of australian theatre. equity also have a quarterly magazine and an weekly email bulletin that you might be able to slip something in. you want to speak to suzanne culph regarding that one.

all the best in your research.
