looking for a play with a child
Wed, 28 Apr 2004, 06:57 pmI'm currently searching for a play i will direct for my honours yr which includes a lead role as a child eg -under 13 yrs. I would prefer it to be Aus but that doesn't really matter, but it must be a play - not a musical!!! Has anyone got any ideas, i've been looking, but i can't find anything i enjoy. I found plenty that are for adult actors to play to children, or really bad quality scripts for the class room, but i'm really looking for something that is quality, includes children and adults and is aimed for adults.
However time is running out, so any suggestion will do :)
thanks
Vanessa

You could try Wolf Lullaby. There are only about 4 parts in the play but the lead is the role of a young girl of about 9 who is accused of killing a toddler.
Alternatively, although I have never seen or read it, Rose Tatoo also has a feq roles for children.

If you have a fairly large cast at your disposal, you could try Terry Pratchett's "Johnny and the Dead", adapted by Stephen Briggs. The four main characters are all 12 year old boys, and the adult supporting characters don't get that much dialogue really - a lot of the parts are non-speaking!
You can buy the script online from the publishers, Oxford University Press. Their Australian website is http://au.oup.com
The script is designed for school students, so it has a lot of useful pointers for drama classes etc.
Enjoy!
