Re: acting work

There's this wonderful thing I like to call 'research'.

Sorry for being sarcastic, but this site has been inundated with young hopefuls such as yourself thinking that we're her ticket for stardom. And expecting all the answers.

Darling, go look yourself. I have been in the same predicament, and I have found numerous sites, all by my own searching ability on the net and through the phonebook.

Show a little initiative

Re: acting work

You're going to have to stop replying to all these seemingly eager young hopefuls Julianne. I think it may be encouraging them to post.

Although it could be a sad indictment that they think fame and fortune etc is only a website or plaintive plea away. (But then, maybe, it is. You never can tell - nothing ventured, nothing gained)
Home & Away, Neighbours and whatever nationality Idol have a lot to answer for methinks in that respect.

Having read most of your previous posts and crgwllms's in reply to them there have been some superb thoughts expressed by both of you. And they all point to the same thing - the proverbial hard yards.

That word you have used - initiative - I have come to the conclusion that it is something that it is very much lacking in the people with whom I associate these days - some of them not that young. Very sad but unfortunately true. We seem to be less able to think for ourselves in today's society.

I wish all seekers of fame and fortune well, but don't hold your breath.
Enjoy whatever else that may come your way.

Re: acting work

I wonder if any of these hopefuls actually read the responses. Or if they even bother to look in the archives for responses to previous simliar posts.

sigh.

I will try and stop - but it's so hard :)

Re: acting work

Yeah lets all be really sarcastic and make someone feel about about themselves. And they say the industries bitchy.

First time i have looked at this site not the best first impression

Re: acting work

Good on you Chloe for taking the initiative to ask the questions. You've obviously found this site which is a good start, lots of info here. However, straight away here's a lesson in developing a tough skin regarding the type of people you can encounter along the way.

You're still young so have a lot of doors open to you. I'm not from QLD so don't know the people there but why not get into some of the yahoo groups. Do a search and get emails sent straight to you. There is lots of info on shows, auditions, training etc to be found. It's a start anyway.

Don't give up matey

Re: acting work

I think you are being a little unfair and generalising far too much, IÂ’m only a teenager and acting is the only thing I want to do. Yes I hear everyone else say this too but not all of us are brain-dead little kids who donÂ’t do any research and expect everything done for us as you assume.

I'm quite aware of my (very low) chances of "making it" and that's not saying anything about my amount of talent, I'm a great actor. The point is not everyone knows where to start so maybe you should encourage them to ask questions and instead of insulting their intelligence you could maybe ANSWER a few questions with some relevant information.

IÂ’ve read the archives and I must say not much helped me, I'm from Perth and all the good advice seems specific to the eastern states. I didnÂ’t let this get me down I went out and researched for myself and I go to all the auditions I can. Maybe asking questions on this site is some peopleÂ’s form of research or their first step. They just donÂ’t know the best way to go about expressing themselves and sometimes end up sounding like beggars, but cut them a little slack they will learn. Just remember we're only young and weÂ’re just trying to find our way.

Just my opinion...

Re: acting work

I agree with you a bit there Nicole, but unfortunately, people like you seem a dying breed. Whilst I have just left my teens behind, I still know what it's like to be constantly thrown into a stereotype and been told to 'get real' when I've expressed my intent to be an actor. As a consequence, I've looked real hard at my ambition, and I realise I'm not in it for the fame or the money - just the enjoyment of it. And it's this realisation that has prompted me to further my research and look further into my desired career.

I have not made a single request on any boards I frequent, asking for information to 'make it' - ie, get auditions, agents, noticed, whatnot. I have garnered my knowledge from information from the Internet -a lot from sites which cater for the new actor and give you all the information you need. Along my travels, I have stumbled upon a number of sites which advertise auditions for theatre, student films, and occasionally paid work. I've had to find this all myself.

The fact is, you are the one looking for the work, not the director/producer/casting agent looking for the actor. It's like looking for a job - you don't just post your details on a site with barely anything to support your credentials and wait for the offers to roll in. A lot more proactive people who are similar to you are out there, and are actively looking for work and getting themselves known. Information requests are OK - I have written a detailed post here http://theatre.asn.au/read.php?f=23&i=2205&t=2202 detailing things you need to do to get paid work. This has been all compiled from information I have picked up from the Internet. I'm sure there are other posts like this one which do answer questions.

But most teens and pre-teens that post here are just looking for a quick entry into a highly competitive environment - just look at the types of posts 'I want to be in a movie' 'I want to act in Home and Away' ' Please give me a job in Film/TV etc' . These sorts of posts indicate that Mary-Sue is more interested in the kind of big name fame and money that comes with being an actor than the actual craft - thus the lack of research.

Other requests can't be answered. One, if I remember, was 'What are some good agents in whatevercity?' A lot of people don't know these things, and therefore don't answer.

As for research, I'm sure kids today are being told to think for themselves and I know that researching assignments are actively encouraged and essential. They won't be lazy and ask for information about the hydrogen atom on a forum and expect immediate emailed responses back - they will do the research. Why any different for your potential career?

Besides, not one of the people we have answered has actually replied and said thank you. Or even replied at all. Many have just left an email address and expects us to contact them directly, and don't return to the site. With this sort of gratitude, no wonder we are a cynical, sarcastic bunch. Feedback is a wonderful thing - for anything!

(besides, you shouldn't be too concerned here - from my knowledge, this site is mainly based on WA productions.)

Re: acting work

Well I was brought up to be polite so I'm saying thank you.
All of what you said was true, and a lot of the teens/pre-teens that post on here aren't realistic enough and i do appreciate where you're coming from but it gets really frustrating when people think we're all hopeless victims of the television who have no initiative and find it impossible to think for ourselves.
I'm just saying is that we're not all like that, I promise.

Re: acting work

Thank goodness ndp.

I have just had a refreshingly good experience today guiding a work experience girl (year 12) through the art and techniques of linear video editing. She was interested in being able to do it and picked it up quite quickly whilst also showing initiative. I only showed her some of the basic requirements and after instructing her through one program she had the idea and only needed basic help for the next three. I also guided her through non-linear editing (computer) last week and she also grasped that quickly.

It really is good to have someone you don't have to tell and/or show ten times before they even have half an idea.
So I guess what I am saying is to agree with your last statement. It's just a pity that they are so seemingly few and far between.

Cheers.

Re: acting work

Thank goodness for people like you who are willing to give young people a chance to learn.

Re: acting work

Do you have any acting work available or know of anyone who does?
Am tired of my brain running on overdrive with ideas and inspiration, but not being able to put these into action due to lack of opportunity. Am part of a theatre company which I have st up with fellow actors' / Directors, and we are planning to play this years Edingburh festival, but need to be doing more and Varied work, more!, more!, more!!.
