Help! I have no experience
Thu, 25 Sept 2003, 09:43 amHi
I am a 19 year old female and I want to do some acting. The only experience I have is a short improvisation course. I found this most enjoyable and would like to be involved in the acting profession. I need to know where to start and what I can do with no experience. Any help will be most appreciated.

Re: Help! I have no experience
Hi,
I dont know who replied last to your email, but what the...:S. I live in Melbourne so i am afraid i can only help you out in that city. I am 15 years old and also love theatre. At the moment I am training for television with Screen Actors Studios. Their phone number is they train their actors as well as represent them which is an added bonus. They have four different studios in Ballarat (03 52291600), Mt. Waverley (Melbourne ((03) 98075600) , and Geelong (by contacting the same number as the ballarat one) Getting an agent is a great way to get more work and you can also begin to build a resume that will help you with auditions. If you are looking for Musical theatre then I would recomend doing some dance training (tap and jazz/funk will help) and some vocal training. If you live in Melbourne then contact me back and maybe i can give you some more names and phone numbers. Well I hope I helped.

Experience in Perth
OK, in Perth you have a vast collection of potential which you have to hunt down to some degree.
If you are interested in theatre then there are plenty of local theatre groups all around the city. Have a look at the following Theatre (ITA) Link to get you started.
http://www.theatre.asn.au/companyResponse.php3?state=WA
Be aware that some of these may not be theatrical groups at all. The bulk of them are however. There is also a question of where you are in Perth and how far you are willing to travel to do theatre. North of the River theatres that I would suggest are Limelight (Wanneroo Repertory Inc. Wanneroo), Garrick Theatre (Guildford), Stirling Players (now located in Innaloo), Play Lovers (Wembley), GRADs based at UWA Nedlands, the Gilbert & Sullivan (now in Balcatta) and Marloo (also known as Darlington Theatre Players up in the hills in GreenMount). This is still but a small smaple but it's a start. South of the river theatres that I know of are The Old Mill (not far from the Zoo), Black Yak (Kalamunda) and Omnibus Production (Salter Point - great for musicals).
For screen and Television, well there I would suggest that you find an agent to represent you and get some advise from them also as to classes, groups and such. There's also the Film and Television Institute in Freo and another organisation I'll just go and grab the website to....
The Actors Collective run Regular Screen Workshops. The address is...
http://www.screenworkshop.iinet.net.au/
This is a great activity to take part in. Learn valuable screen acting skills will building up a video portfolio (really important in this area) and contact within the industry.
As for finding an agent, there really is only a couple around and I would suggest that you call and talk with each one to find out who would best suit your needs. There are many agencies out there that are purely modelling companies but will still put you on your books, and then there are companies that look like modelling agenicies that may actually get you TV work. Then there are several companies who do not do modelling at all and I would suggest starting here. Frog, Actors Management are two I can think of at the mo.....
I hope this helps.

Re: Help! I have no experience
The Film and Television Institute's web-site is at
www.fti.asn.au
There are often audition notices for short films on our discussion forums, the majority of course run here are focused on behind the camera skills but all the aspiring Directors need actors.
I can definatley recommend the Screen Actors Workshops that Dixi mentioned.
Cheers
