Mon, 11 Aug 2003, 12:13 pmHi Elaine
I have copied a very comprehensive reply re youth theatre in Perth that Amanda Chesterton posted earlier this year that you might not have seen. I don't think there is any WA youth theatre group that does only musicals but it is worth phoning all the ones that Amanda talks about to see what they have planned for the future.
It is also worth contacting Midnite Youth Theatre Company as they do at least one musical each year. Their next musical has already been cast ("The Rose and the Ring" that they are taking overseas at the end of the year) but there are plans to do it at the Playhouse next year with a bigger cast so it would be worth contacting Dean on 9442 1580 or Josh on 9442 1584 to join Midnite and get put on the mailing list so that you can be notified when auditions are coming up. Membership is free.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

Be Active BSX Theatre (Black Swan Theatre's youth arm, now based in Nedlands) is currently on a membership drive, and has some fab productions (including 'Oh What a Lovely War' directed by acting Black Swan artistic director, Peter Kingston) and workshops coming up this year. Call Jenifer Leys on (08) 6389 0311 or email her on general@bstc.com.au for a membership form and programme.
WA Youth Theatre Company (WAYTCo) is also currently doing membership renewals and welcoming new members. Call Melanie Jasper on 9226 2144 or email waytco@hotmail.com to become a member. Their production of The Tempest is cast and in rehearsals, but there will be other productions and workshops to participate in later this year. They also have a fabulous programme set up with Perth Theatre Company called MetorMates, where applicants from WAYTCo are invited to become a mentee to either an actor or a technician in a Perth Theatre Co show.
Membership to both costs $10. WAYTCo encourages 13-25 year olds to join, and BSX focusses on 17-25 year olds (although BSX can and do accept slightly older and younger members).
My current employers would probably like me to mention the Gecko Bytes programme run by Barking Gecko Theatre Company. There are drama workshops run for youth aged 5-17. Check out http://www.barkinggecko.com/ for details or email project officer Dave Ryding on david@barkinggecko.com.au. No auditions or productions (at this stage) but you get to work with local Perth actors and drama tutors under the banner of the state's premier childrens' theatre company.
