Re: Songs For A New World????
I absolutely luuuurrrrvvvveee this show and would definately pay to see it as long as I trusted that the group putting it on would do it justice.
I directed a similar style of show in Perth a couple of years ago and while it was, in my humble opinion, an amazing show it did badly at the box office. I would like to think that a larger, more theatrical city like Sydney would have more people willing to see something new and a little different.
Good luck. Jason Robert Brown's songs deserve to be heard.

Re: Songs For A New World????
I would join Gill in saying I LOVE this show and would think about seeing it IF it had a ripper of a cast - hard, HARD music with enormous vocal demands.
However, I think you would be pressed to find anyone (apart from me and Gill) who would go unless you were able to round up Marina Prior, Todd McKenney, Rachel Beck, Lisa McCune, or Anthony Warlow.
Good luck.
You would also really need to find a black guy to cover those African-American songs (no, you really, really shouldn't substitute it with a white guy - you'd miss the point/feel of those songs), and you'd probably have an even harder time finding him than the afore mentioned. Great, great show, but probably not a good idea unless you're happy to run at a significant loss and are prepared to scour the country to cast it.

Re: Songs For A New World????
It did pretty well in Melbourne a year or two ago when it was performed. Still stands as one of my most favourite performances.

I saw the Melbourne production. Most enjoyable, and it had a good house that night.
For Jason R.B fans, one of his most recent shows The Last 5 Years opens in Melb. late this month.
Also, the man himself is coming out here for the Adel. Cabaret Convention.

In the Melbourne production, the 2 blokes were white. I didn't know that one of the roles was written for a gentleman of colour until I read the above post.

Re: Songs For A New World????
...and according to the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, they're doing the first fully orchestrated 'Songs For A New World' under the direction of JRB himself.
Well, I hope I'm proved decidedly wrong. Perhaps keep an eye on this one and if they do well with their box office it may be a nod for you? People's appetites may well be whetted for it.
PS The references to 'we came over in a crowded ship' and 'working the railroads' can make sense with a white guy, but I feel they have far more impact, particularly in the context of an American history/journey, if an African American performer does them, as per the original recording. Just my opinion, though.
