AUDITION NOTICE

The Elephant Man
by Bernard Pomerance

The Naked Emotion Ensemble is presenting this Tony Award-winning play in May of 2003, at the Rechabites Hall in Northbridge, directed by David Meadows (Mozart & Salieri; Britannicus).

This will be a spare, actor-based production, requiring actors capable of tremendous subtlety and economy of gesture.

ROLES:

JOSEPH (JOHN) MERRICK:
Male. Early 20Â’s.
The title character. A gentle, sweet-natured young man with a genuinely beautiful soul, trapped inside a body crippled by hideous deformities. As per the playwright’s instructions, Merrick will be played without any “special make-up”. The actor will be required to give the impression of Merrick’s severe physical abnormalities through sheer acting ability, rather than through a mound of latex. PLEASE NOTE: persons with a history of back trouble are dissuaded from auditioning for this role.

FREDERICK TREVES:
Male. Early 30Â’s.
The doctor who rescues Merrick from the circus sideshow. A deeply sensitive, intelligent, and thoughtful man. Despite the positive aspects of his humane act of charity towards Merrick, he nonetheless remains plagued with doubt over the negative aspects.

MRS KENDAL:
Female. 30-50.
The leading West-End actress who becomes one of MerrickÂ’s closest and most loyal friends. A passionate, eloquent woman with a warm heart and an artistÂ’s sensibilities.

CARR GOMM:
Male. 50-60.
Administrator of the London Hospital. A gentleman and a scholar. A decent, pragmatic man with real compassion for MerrickÂ’s plight.

ROSS - Merrick’s “owner”
BISHOP WALSHAM HOW - the hospital chaplain
SNORK - an orderly
Male. 30-50.

PINHEAD
NURSE SANDWICH
PRINCESS ALEXANDRA
DUCHESS
JELLY WILLOW
Female. 20-50.

PINHEAD MANAGER
ENGLISH POLICEMAN
