Tue, 18 Sept 2001, 06:25 pmhi, just wondering if anyone has any advice on getting an agent. i'm based in melbourne and want to get some work (like everybody else on the planet, hey). i've done quite a bit on stage and in different styles and i'd like to put up my hand for some professional work.
any help, advice or contacts would be most appreciated.

RE: need help to get an agent
Thu, 20 Sept 2001, 11:35 pmHi Mike!
Unfortunately I am not in Melbourne but I do have an agent so hopefully I can help you in some way! The best bet is always word of mouth. Do any of your friends or aquantences have agents? If so find out who they are, what they specialise in as, altho most agents cover all areas of performing arts, others do specify in certain areas, so that is always a good way to find one, and how I got mine. The other best way is to research some agencies, look them up in the "yellow or white" pages, give them a call and have a chat and see what they have to offer, they are not scary ppl and are quite prepared to answer your questions. Just remember they are there to help you!! And if you are not sure, ask friends and family for advice, ask the agent any questions you want to know, as it's important to find out everything before you sign.
Just jumping ahead tho, one thing ppl doe tend to complain about is the commission in which the agent takes, just remember one thing, that is the only way they make money and every cent they take as commission can be claimed back at the end of the financial year so you aren't losing anything!!! So don't let that worry you! But that is jumping way ahead!!! It's just a subject which is well debated:) Well I hope this has helped a bit. If you wan't to know anything else just drop us a line and I will be glad to answer any questions, I too was once in your position, and finding someone and getting started is always the hardest thing, after that it's easy:)
cheers!
Sherry
