Hi, I was wandering how I would go about getting lisencing rights and a really inexpensive way to put on "A Chorus Line". Friends and I would very much enjoy putting on a piece of ameture theater and we've attempted it once before with trying to stage The Who's Tommy but after months of preperation, personal matters got in the way and everything fizzled. It would be really nice if we got to put on a much loved show such as A Chorus Line.

So advice on stuff like liscening is the main issue I think. Venues, auditions, advertising is all under the hat.

So if anyone's keen to help with how I'd get info on copyrightand stuff, please feel free to contact me.

RE: How Would I Go About Putting On A Famous Show?

Rights are through Tams-Witmark in New York. They have a website so you can find the contact details there. Get out your wallet though, performance rights are adjusted from American dollars.

Good luck, Lee, although I don't think ACL would be the easiest show to do for your first go at putting on amateur theatre. It requires a cast of at least 17(?) performers, half boys half gals, who are primarily dancers but can sing quite a difficult score and have strong characterisations with some quite emotional scenes.

You'll also need an excellent choreographer (especially if he/she has to work with your performers limitations and still make you look vaguely passable as Broadway standard dancers).

It's a great show, but I'm just suggesting you shouldn't bite off more you can chew.

Thanks Simon for your message and yeah I do realize A Chorus line requires all that. And quite possibly you may be correct in saying that it is a bit of a huge step to be the first one. Maybe Godspell hey????

Cheers

1. there is NO easy/inexpensive way to produce A Chorus Line
just for starters it will cost you about $5000.00 (Aus) for rights/scores etc which you HAVE to hire from Tams-Witmark.

2. The Old Mill Ttheatre is already gearing up to do this show either in November or January
why not look out for the audition notice and come along and participate.

Thanik you Norma for your reply

That sounds like one hell ofa lot of money, so maybe I should njust focus on my own works. If possible can you, or any one else, offer any suggestion on how I can just get a piece of mine started, workshopped and then produced with very minimal budget. The shows I've written don't require much, but defintely require quite talented actors who might have to work simply for the love of the theater.

Also, i would love to get involved with A Chorus Line, please give me more details. But I do have a handicap as a performer, I ain't able to dance. But back stage work, voluntary or paid, would be brilliant.

Cheers

Hi Lee, ten out of ten for enthusiasm, you sound like an acheiver to me, but as an associate of Normas' at the Old Mill Theatre, I have to agree with her as I too have some idea of the cost and involvement required to put on this type of show. Your comment on being interested in our production has great merit as we will be looking for backstage crew and the added bonus of working with Joe McCabe the director would be of great benefit to you as he is a 'technical Guru'. He is in the throe's at present of directing/rehearsing the musical Man of La Mancha which will be performed at The Old Mill Theatre in July/August. To contact him try his phone 93777568 or email hylas@iinet.net.au, i'm sure he would be delighted to here from you.
Best of luck,
Robert Vincent

Hi again Lee, Sorry I gave you a wrong phone number for Joe McCabe. It should have been 93377682 or alternatively you can leave a message at the Old Mill Theatre on 93678719 or his email hylas@iinet.net.au or his mobile 0417965278.
best wishes
Robert

Try something less ambitious first. many companies have made good money with theatre restaurant productions in clubs or halls.

Don't let people disuade you. If you want to be a producer..

Have a go!!
