I would like to invite you all to The Australian Premiere of:
"Fronteras Americanas"

Written by Guillermo Verdecchia

Performed by Alirio Zavarce
Directed by Sam Haren

Guillermo Verdecchia's play, Fronteras Americanas (American Borders), is a one person theatre performance that explores the joys and struggles of building a home between two cultures, while exploding the images and stereotypes of Latinos and Latin America.

Fronteras Americanas escorts you to the border- On one side, your translator will take you to a dangerous and exotic Latin landscape! Be prepared to encounter treacherous Banditos, taste real tequila, learn Spanish, and maybe even be seduced by a Latin Lover! But on the other side of the border, you will find one man who is lost in his journey across nations and geography in search for identity and home.

This humorous and witty play has been highly acclaimed, winning the Canadian Governor GeneralÂ’s Award in 1993, and the Chalmers Outstanding New Play award in 1992.

Turning stereotypes and cliches on their sombreros, Fronteras Americanas successfully combines multimedia technology with an intimate performance. Slides, video projection and live cameras are all used to transform a distant scenario into a vivid experience.

Fronteras Americanas features two emerging artists, Actor Alirio Zavarce and Director Sam Haren, who are both graduates of the Flinders University Drama Centre in 2000.

Alirio has worked with the Yaschin Ensemble on the creative development of Intimacy, and with Brink Productions in The Ecstatic Bible as part of the Telstra Adelaide 2000 Festival.

Sam in 2001 has worked as an Assistant Director to Simon Phillips for The Tempest (MTC), will assist Rosalba Clemente on Holy Day (STCSA), and Mary Moore for The Memory Museum (The Centenary of Federation)

“Among the finest one-person shows of the past decade” –Jon Kaplan, Plays International

“Outrageous, funny, devastatingly witty” – CBC, Later the Same Day

“Zavarce brings a lot of energy, playfulness and intelligence” -David O’Brien, DB magazine
