OPEN CALL TO DIRECTORS

Fancy working on a large-scale Shakespeare project with two respected companies, a significant budget, strong publicity, and full administrative, production and artistic support? Here's your chance.

For the entire month of July Broken Limb Theatre Co. have booked Rechabites Hall in Northbridge for a season of back-to-back Shakespeare productions co-produced by Shakespearience.

We are currently asking for submission which will result in two Directors taking on one full length Shakespeare play each. The successful Directors will be selected by the Broken Limb and Shakespearience boards based on the strength and artistic merit of their submissions. Successful Directors will also be granted a modest stipend to defray personal costs associated with production.

Submissions close on Friday, March 30, 2001. They should include relevant artist biography/ies, support material including letters of intent, diagrams, previous reviews etc (if applicable) and must address the following questions:

1) Which Shakespeare play do you intend to produce? What is it about this particular play that appeals to you as a Director?

2) What is your intended treatment or overall artistic vision for the play? What do you feel is unique or innovative about this vision? Why would a potential audience member choose to see this production over another?

3) Do you have any specific set, costuming, technical or casting requirements? How would you propose dealing with these requirements?

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

1) Submissions (and enquiries) may be emailed to or posted to 'July Shakespeare' PO Box 986, Claremont, 6910. Any support material provided in electronic form must be Windows compatible. Support material is non-returnable unless a stamped, self-addressed envelope is provided.

2) Seasons are as follows: Production #1 runs July 5-8 & 10-14. Production #2 runs July 19-22 & 24-28.

3) One of the plays produced will be from the 2001 Upper School syllabus: The Tempest, Othello, Julius Caesar, Merchant of Venice, Richard II, Twelfth Night, Romeo & Juliet. Please note that Macbeth was performed by Broken Limb last year and will not be performed as part of this project.

4) Successful (and unsuccessful) applicants will be notified by Friday 13 April, 2001.

5) Auditions are scheduled to take place on Saturday 28 April and Sunday 29 April.
