Shakespeare - L Cubed!
Fri, 1 May 1998, 02:35 pmL^3, LLL or Loves Labours Lost!Keep your eyes peeled for colourful posters promoting Loves Labours Lost, Blak Yak's production of Shakespeare's classic comedy. The King and his friends swear to dedicate themselves to study for three years and allow no distracting women in their presence. Their promise is no sooner made than the beautiful Princess of France arrives with her three gorgeous ladies in waiting! The four men fall desperately in love with the women - but don't want to be caught breaking their vows. A string of comic encounters, masquerades and a disguised rendevouz ensue. Into this melting pot are thrown a fantastical Spaniard, a learned schoolmaster, Constable Dull and host of other memorable and hilarious characters. This production, set in the late 19 century, remains very true to Shakespeare's text, yet is still fresh and lively and promises something for audiences of all ages. This is Grant Malcolm's second visitation to the lightest and brightest of Shakespeare's comedies, having staged it previously in the Dolphin Theatre at UWA. "This play has only recently come into its own", says director Grant Malcolm. "It has probably been performed more times in the last 50 years, than throughout the rest of its 400 year history.""The characters are immediately recognisable to a modern audience. They belong to a family of broadly drawn figures of fun that have been the stock and trade of comic writers for the past 400 years. They leap off the page like comic strip characters in a pop up picture book.""The storyline is in essence a situation comedy - a form familiar to us from so many tv shows. The plot is amongst the simplest and least involved of any of Shakespeare's comedy and culminates in a remarkable, beautiful and quite unexpected bitter-sweet ending."Don't miss out!The show opens Friday 22 May and runs for a very short 3 week season closing on Saturday 6 June.Book your tickets now!
