I LOOK AT ALL THE LONELY PEOPLE CAKEWALK Films (Director and Writer Libby Baros, Producer Caitlin Baird, Director of Photography Anthony Seah, Art Director Kara Hanlon, and Editor Evelyn Leckie) will be holding auditions for their upcoming 5 minute short film ‘I Look at All the Lonely People’ at the University of Western Australia, Crawley. ‘I Look at All the Lonely People’ is a film exposing the ever-present, often hidden, and immense amount of loneliness in our modern society – ironically, one where communicating and networking with others has never been so easy. It is told from the perspective of an anomalous young woman who takes the time to notice all of the lonely people she sees as she goes about her life, sensing this loneliness in them. Through the witnessing of moments in the lives of several characters whose lives all intertwine in some way; a single, middle-aged man, a distant couple, and a widowed old woman, the film aims to evoke strong emotions in its viewers - sadness at witnessing the suffering of these individuals, empathy for them, and possibly even identification with their plight. Its resolution offers a sense of hope through the connection of the couple, which is forged by tragedy, and the breaking down of the fourth wall by the young woman as she metaphorically invites the audience into her life. In doing so the film poses a question to the audience: do they, and should they let the lonely people in their own lives, into those lives? Attached are detailed character breakdowns for three main and three supporting/minor characters that are yet to be cast. As this is a student project, we unfortunately do not have the means to pay actors, but on-set catering will of course be provided, and all actors will be provided with a DVD of the finished film for their show reel (as well as many, many sincere thanks for all of their time and effort!). The film will be filmed with a professional grade full-HD camera, and screened at an end of year screening and awards gala at the outdoor theatre at UWA, the Somerville Auditorium, to guest industry judges and professionals. Director and Writer Libby Baros won the University’s Jury Prize for best second-year film last year, for her short film My Black Balloon, which was also part of the official selection for the Clare Valley Film Festival in South Australia earlier this year, at which it was viewed by well-known industry professionals from around Australia and the UK who also selected the film to be shown. Filming will take place in the first, second and third weeks of October, and dates will be dependent on actors’ and crew availability, although as the entire story takes place at night, most filming will take place in the evening. If you are interested in playing one of the roles below and helping us to fulfil our unique vision, please contact Director and Writer Libby Baros at Elizabeth.Kate.Baros@gmail.com with your name, contact details, any relevant experience (a resume is great if you have one, but is not at all required), and a headshot (this does not have to be professionally taken, any picture of you will suffice as long as it is recent and clear). As we are on a tight schedule, but feel that great casting is essential to the success of this film, our Director is making herself available at all times possible during the next week for auditions, and beyond if necessary. Please therefore also indicate the closest possible time and date that you are available to audition, starting from this Sunday the 30th of September. Auditions will only take a maximum of 20 minutes, and applicants will be advised as soon as possible as to the outcome of their audition. Please note that your audition will be filmed, but only for casting purposes, and it will not be shown to anyone except for those involved in the casting process. All interested individuals - actors and non-actors, are welcome to audition, and experience is not necessary – only the passion to act, the willingness to be directed, the physical attributes of the character, and most importantly, the ability to connect with and convey the emotions listed below are required! The team at CAKEWALK Films look forward to hearing from you! MIDDLE-AGED MAN (Lead #1) Sex: Male Age: looks 40 – 65 Height: No preference Weight: No preference Description: Middle-Aged Man works as an engineer in a managerial role, for a company in the city. He has no wife or children. His father is dead, and his mother is in a nursing home. His only sibling, a brother, lives over East and they are not in contact. He is a kind, gentle and introverted man, who is extremely lonely. It is his birthday but he has no one to celebrate it with, so has dinner at his favourite restaurant alone. It would be ideal for the actor who portrays Middle-Aged Man to be able to strongly show the emotions nervousness, surprise, embarrassment, disappointment, sadness, loneliness, longing, and hope. MRS. SMITH (Lead #2) Sex: Female Age: looks 30 – 40 Height: No preference Weight: No preference Description: Mrs. Smith works as a waitress in a small neighbourhood Italian restaurant. She has been married to Mr. Smith for 5 years but they have no children, as they have been unable to conceive, which has been a major source of difficulty in their relationship. Mrs. Smith is a very caring, emotional and spiritual person who craves constant love and affection from her husband, which she does not receive. She is in love with Mr. Smith but as they find it difficult to communicate with each other on an emotional level, their relationship has become strained and distant. It would be ideal for the actor who portrays Mrs. Smith to be able to strongly show the emotions empathy, embarrassment, sadness, loneliness, regret, hurt, fear, shock and hope. MR. SMITH (Lead #3) Sex: Male Age: looks 30 – 40 Height: No preference Weight: No preference Description: Mr. Smith works as a mid-level manager for a telecommunications company. He has been married to Mrs. Smith for 5 years but they have no children, as they have been unable to conceive, which has been a major source of difficulty in their relationship. He is an outgoing, friendly and caring person, but due to a difficult upbringing in a broken household, he finds it hard to show his emotions and tries to conform to the masculine stereotype of being strong and silent, thus further tending to conceal his emotions from Mrs. Smith. This has resulted in their relationship becoming strained and distant, despite the fact that he still loves her. It would be ideal for the actor who portrays Mr. Smith to be able to strongly show the emotions loneliness, insecurity, sadness, hurt, shock, compassion, caring, tenderness and hope. YOUNG WAITER (Supporting #1) Sex: Male Age: looks 17 – 25 Height: No preference Weight: No preference Description: Young Waiter plays the supporting role of waiting on the couple in love and Middle-Aged man, and has a short non-verbal exchange with Mrs. Smith in her capacity as a waitress. He is an ambitious, polite, outgoing but somewhat impatient young man who is working part time as a waiter while completing a University degree. He treats the customers with respect and a good level of service but his mind is focused elsewhere on his degree and social life and he doesn’t really have an interest in engaging with fellow employees, preferring to spend his time enjoying the nightlife with friends. It would be ideal for the actor who portrays Young Waiter to be able to strongly show the emotions contentment, confidence, impatience and mild indifference. MAN IN LOVE (Minor Role #3) Sex: Male Age: looks 20 - 35 Height: No preference Weight: No preference Description: Man in Love plays the minor role of enjoying a romantic dinner with his partner, Woman in Love, in a restaurant. He is confident, playful, and quite enraptured by his partner. It would be ideal for the actor who portrays Man in Love to be able to strongly show the emotions affection, desire, enjoyment, happiness and contentment. WOMAN IN LOVE (Minor Role #4) Sex: Female Age: looks 20 - 35 Height: No preference Weight: No preference Description: Woman in Love plays the minor role of enjoying a romantic dinner with her partner, Man in Love, in a restaurant. She is bubbly, flirtatious, outgoing and very charming. It would be ideal for the actor who portrays Woman in Love to be able to strongly show the emotions attraction, desire, zeal, enjoyment, happiness and contentment.
