Good Question Rebecca Jo,

Good Question Rebecca Jo, and there's a couple of reasons. The actors won't be playing 'Christians' anymore than any other plays; that'd just be creepy ('Hello friends, we all love Jesus, YAY!' *cue vomit) and a waste of everyone's time. Our shows aim to explore the link between life and faith, how the spiritual part of us interacts with everyday issues and situations. The roles are varied, as are the issues our plays cover, our performers play all sorts of characters from all sorts of cultures and backgrounds. There's a large youth-work component to what we do as well. If Fine Edge Theatre Company simply came to a school performed a play and left, it wouldn't be a problem, but we also run workshops to follow up the issues covered in our plays. To do that we need people with some experience of life and faith, as well as integrity to the issues involved. Like you say, actors playing bullies in a play don't need to be bullies, but if they were bullies then it'd be hard for them to talk about bullying to the students in real and transforming ways after the play. Some might not think it's important that actor's lives represent the values that they present, they're just acting after all, but our interns have to share something of their true selves with students. In our line of work genuine role models are far more powerful than trite messages. The other reason is that our positions are voluntary internships. While the performance skills and experience that our interns learn are invaluable, and while there is a lot of support for our interns, the demands of the role are huge. It takes people who believe that they are called to make a difference to the lives of young people, people who are called by faith to sacrifice something of themselves for the benefit of others, and to not get paid for it. That's why we ask for interns who's lives actively engage with their faith, who are practicing Christians, and who can act as well. Anything else you're wondering, let me know. Sincerely, Theo Messenger
