Household items that would have previously been crushed under a landfill compactor are being given a new lease of life, thanks to a new recycling shop at the Henderson Waste Recovery Park. Opening on September 11, The Recycle Shop is another way the City of Cockburn is ensuring products are being re-used to their maximum potential, instead of going to landfill. Cockburn Deputy Mayor Kevin Allen said landfill staff remove items from the waste stream, check for re-use potential, and then value and display them for sale. “We currently remove steel, timber, plastic, green waste, oil, batteries and e-waste to re-use as raw materials but this is a way of making items that might simply be broken or neglected, and in need of a few minor repairs, suitable for re-sale,” he said. “The concept follows on from car park markets and opportunity shops that have blossomed in recent times and the main advantage is that our products are very affordable with numerous bargains to be found. “It’s another tangible symbol of the City of Cockburn’s commitment to sustainability, alongside our re-use of methane gas and raw materials at the Henderson Waste Recovery Park.” A range of materials is on offer for theatres looking for props and set items, including chairs, tables, sofa, bikes, surfboards and more - at extremely affordable prices (bikes start at $5; a sofa set is $45). People who may miss the annual junk verge collection can take items to The Recycle Shop for the cost of a trailer pass, when delivering other waste. Visits to The Recycle Shop are free-of-charge if not delivering any rubbish. “This initiative is further reducing the amount of waste going to landfill, improving the percentage of waste being recycled and increasing promotional and educational opportunities for sustainability,” Cr Allen said. The Recycle Shop is open 8.30am to 4.30pm Fridays to Mondays. Henderson Waste Recovery Park is located on Rockingham Road, Henderson, about 2km south of the Russell Road intersection (Henderson is between Munster and Wattleup).
