Sex, Twihards and Jane Austen: Are You Man Enough for Northanger Abbey?
Fri, 10 July 2009, 09:03 pmHorror, Action, Intrigue, Murder, Suspence...Empire Waistlines? Heaving Bosoms? Jane Austen?
Mention the name 'Austen' and you'll receive one of two reactions. The average female, whether sixteen or ninety six, dissolves into a fit of misty eyed romanticism. Tell them there is a Jane Austen play, they giggle hysterically, take acting classes and begin stalking the director. This all has something to do with Colin Firth in a very wet white t-shirt. The average male on the other hand, turns a little pale, begins sweating like a pig, and mutters under his breath 'grunt, that's girls stuf.' Then throws in a few more grunts for good measure. I suspect a soppy wet Colin Firth also has something to do with this.
However, to the relief of the men, Northanger Abbey does not feature either Colin Firth, or a wet t-shirt. What it does have to offer, is a dash of gothic horror, a liberal dose of swagger and sarcasm--and the chance to be as attractive as Colin himself. (Except not quite as poncey) The lucky young male actors appearing in this play will also face the added perk of giggling, hysterical, sixteen to ninety-six year old women throwing themselves at their feet.
Being a young male actor myself, It seemed obvious to me that every young male actor would seize the opportunity to be a part of this. And yes a sizable amount have organized for secret auditions, using clandestine means, however I underestimated the lack of collective testicular mass amongst perths male theatrical community.
That is to say, do you have the Balls for 'Austen?' Are you man enough to expose yourself to the hordes of giggling women? Brave enough to don the tights?
If so you can 'clandestinely' organize for an audition by emailing me at northanger2009@hotmail.com. Be quick, I'm running out of spaces to fit the men in with all the giggling hordes...
