Pelican Theatre Company intends to stage Romeo and Juliet in May, 2009. This is a company-building project, intended to bring new blood to the company. Pelican has been working for 6 years, producing 15 original works, including musicals and plays, and one adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream, set in the 1920s and with original Charleston-style music. This last production was performed in the open air at The Briars, Mornington. Otherwise, performances are in the company's home, Hastings Hall in Hastings. The production of Romeo and Juliet would be open to original concepts, in that it could be set in any era, providing the original text (modified for length) were used. Ideas so far have included Nazi Germany in the 1930s (Nazis v. Communists), Rival Footy Supporters, Gangs of underground sewer-livers and several other sillier concepts. Performances at Hastings Hall are preferred, since budgets are small. Auditions planned for early February, with some planning in December/January. We are not intending to pay a salary or fee to the Director other than reasonable expenses and fawning gratitude. Great experience for an up-and-coming original dramatic mind. Contact Artistic Director, Gordon Gribbin on ggrib@bigpond.net.au or by telephone on (03) 5979 4824.
