Looking for Theatre work
Wed, 14 Nov 2007, 10:01 amI am enquiring about how to go about gaining employment next year within the theatre as a production assistant etc...
I currently work at Sony BMG as Assistant to the Producer working on the music program "The Music Jungle"
I have studied Film and Television production at North Sydney Tafe and at the New York Film School, I have also completed many acting courses and I know my stuff.
I am interested in getting involved more in production and producing and actively promoting theatre productions etc, any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanking you

First of all, it would help
First of all, it would help if we knew where you were, in order to give you more specific advice. I'm guessing from the info in your profile that you are Sydney based - please correct if I'm wrong.
If so, then you should contact Sydney venues - both arts related and community. Most people don't hire 'production assistants' in theatre as they do in film/TV. By that, I mean that venues and community centres usually want either: designers/operators, or general crew. Admin roles are usually given to people who have previously worked in large companies in admin roles...
However, there are plenty of shows out there, so you could try starting small - working with fringe groups or small venues, as well as approaching production companies and festivals. Larger shows will expect you to have previous experience working on a touring production, which I'm guessing from your profile, you have only done film/TV, and not so much theatre.
Production assistants' roles are quite different in theatre than in film/TV, which is why I suggest you start small. Do some general crewing to get a handle on the local theatre scene, and work your way up from there.
Check out both the classifieds section on this site, as well as the Arts Hub jobs feed. Also check www.alia.com.au which posts most technical theatre jobs in the country. They also have a forum, and you can post there and see if anyone is willing to give you a go/have any jobs available.

No worries - you can always
No worries - you can always see if the Opera House needs any crew or staff. They regularly advertise for people.
