Hello all, Im in year ten, and like all year tens i have to do two weeks work experience. I dont want to get stuck in a shopping centre somewhere stacking shelves, so i was wondering if anyone knew of a theatre company or somewhere related to the arts that needs a hand for a couple of weeks. I'd like someting related to theatre management and directing, but im not really fussed. Thanks, Alicia

Alicia, this is a great

Alicia, this is a great idea for you to get some work experience however you are going to need to give people just a little more information in order for them to be able to assist you. What dates are you looking at this work experience happening? What city / area are you located in etc If you can give more information in regards to this then you may get further assistance. Good luck

Hi Alicia, You may want to

Hi Alicia, You may want to check out some of the local professional companies that offer work experience for school students. MTC, Vic Arts Centre, Arena Theatre Co., and many others offer such a thing. You can usually also do similar experiences with festivals, though it is a good idea to also volunteer for companies, festivals and venues. The Fringe Festival is always looking for volunteers, and it means you get to see some shows for free too. Many companies ask for help in their front of house/ushering, and is a great way to get your foot in the door. You should also note: work experience with companies and organisations usually means that you will be stuck stacking shelves and doing random admin/production tasks. Rarely will you actually be able to do hands on directing/theatre management stuff - that's what the paid staff get paid for! However: it is an excellent place to begin, and if you're lucky to be around doing FOH/ushering or during rehearsal time, you will get to be an integral part of a production's season.
