Wanted: Actors, Technicians and anybody just willing to lend a hand! :) The Western Suburbs Youth Theatre Company (WSYTC) is an amateur theatre company that is growing and evolving with each production. With a membership of actors, administrators and backstage crew from 17-26, we aim to put on good quality plays with enthusiastic and reliable individuals in a sociable environment. We rehearse each Sunday in Nedlands and perform in Mosman Park. We have just finished our successful production of ‘Popcorn’ by Ben Elton and are planning to hold auditions very soon. We are keen to see some fresh faces at rehearsals! The next few plays we are currently looking at require quite a few males, so there are some great opportunities for committed guys to get some experience. What's your definition of successful? This is the first I've even heard of you guys doing the show Popcorn. Blak Yak/WASP Theatre made their shows in 2005 really known through heavy promotion, what were your audiences like?

Networking

This comment is a perfect example of the lacking network that exists in WA Theatre (and possible other states). No offence to the author of the posting in anyway, shape or form. It is just the way things are around here. No-one seems to know the existence of each other.

There's no doubt that there could be improvements to the tools, better utilisation and I occasionally despair like others at the signal to noise ratio - one of the areas where we could make most improvement - but in reality I don't believe a failure "to know of the existence of each other" is a network failure. I think it's simply indicative of just how large and diverse the broader theatre community is. I recollect that I'd been performing and directing professionally for three or so years after graduating before I even became aware of the network of community theatres here in WA. A couple of years later I was directing with one community group, some members of which expressed surprise at my level of skill given they'd never heard of me directing anything before. Only a few days ago I was quizzed by a local theatrical acquaintance of more than 20 years about what the Finley Awards were and who Robert Finley was. The obvious hyperbole of "No-one seems to know the existence of each other" disguises the fact that tens of thousands of us do know of the existence of each other, it's just that the theatre industry and community so large that almost as many again may be operating outside this fraternity. I don't see that as cause for despair. I embrace it as a challenge. :-) Cheers Grant

Grant, I admit my statement was rather global, but I think it goes without saying that the ITA Website is an absolute goldmine for networking and has done wonders for the minimalistic communication that occurs otherwise. I of course was not refering to the site in anyway.

Nor do I wish to imply that there is no networking at all. It is certainly there and projects such as this site only serve to further that. It is a work in progress.

I am flabbergasted at the apparent 'ignorance' (the non-insulting definition) ;-) of the availability of theatre in Perth and WA. Being a little more on the inside myself and knowing how much is out there, And also being aware that certain groups mentioned in previous postings of this thread have used this site to promote themselves previously, I am surprised and a little saddened when someone makes a comment along the lines of the one by 'Walter Plinge' on the 3-8-06 entitled 'What's your definition of...'. The fact is, I hear that sort of statement alot.

Grant, I do believe there is a network out there and we are a part of it. It just seems to me that the network is a little too exclusive. Does that make sense?

Walter Plingei, our

Walter Plinge, our definition of successful simply means that the cast and audience both enjoyed the play and we exceeded the practical targets that we set for ourselves in terms of audience and ticket sales. We are very new and are improving with each production. We are an amateur theatre company run by people who love theatre (but don't work in the industry) and we are exploring different ways to market ourselves at the moment. we are always happy to get constructive feedback, but please keep in mind that although we are committed to putting on quality productions, we may have more modest goals than larger, older and professional companies. we would appreciate some support.
