I am planning to put on the new musical ‘Limelight’ in Sydney in January 2007. The production was first performed in the UK in 2004 and has never yet been performed outside of the UK. The aim is to run a kind of ‘summer school’ workshop, whereby we rehearse daily over 10 days, and then give 3-6 performances in a theatre. The show would be open to teenagers from 13 upwards, and each participant would pay a small fee to cover costumes and venue hire. (around $30 - $40 each). I am also looking at getting a grant for the production, which is why I need to get the key team onboard now. I would be producing and directing, and need a musical director and choreographer with vision, creativity and drive to help push the project forwards. I already have the backing tracks on CD – we can either try to use a live band (11 piece) or use the CD, depending on final budget, and musical director’s preference. I would also be happy to record some click track (e.g. some instruments and all group vocals) and to have some instruments live. When we performed before we had live drums, bass and guitar and everything else was on click. All solo vocals / duets obviously have to be live, and the chorus should sing even if they’ve pre-recorded their songs due to lack of radio-mics for the chorus! The songs are a mixture of styles and the choreography would need to reflect this. Most of it is typical musical style, but there is also a ballet and a latin piece. There are quite a few dance pieces. I cannot offer a wage, but the project will be profit share between the three of us, and because of the participants’ fee, and any possible funding, there should definitely be some money at the end of it. The project will only go ahead if there is sufficient money from fees / funding to cover production costs. If you would like to know more about the project please contact me. Can I ask what the logic is

Can I ask what the logic is behind getting the participants to give their money and the three directors get the profits? Especially if you are able to gain funding? Unusual way to do things... the logic!

if a grant alone could cover the costs, then there will be no reason to charge participants - whole point is that we need to cover the costs! logic behind it since you ask...because as a teenager i paid to be involved in most of the productions i took part in!! either people will want to do it or they wont - and we're not asking industry professionals to give money - it's for youngsters who want to get involved and may not be able to afford to be part of a stage school or youth theatre charging hundreds of dollars per term. trust me i'm not doing this for money - in the last 3 years i've spent over $5000 of my own money on productions (and i work in technical theatre as a career so im not in any way rich!)- but i can't expect other people who are professionals in their field to work for nothing at all for two weeks on my project.

You

Sarah - we never met. We share a surname. My daughter Sally (24) is in your field, in the UK, (but as an actress); and you always appear somewhere in the weblistings! I simply want to wish you all the best - may all your plans work out; Sally's too! Robert Gooda
