AUDITION NOTICE
“STEPPING OUT” by Richard Harris
Directed by Graeme Johnson
Choreography by Christine Ellis
A reading for this upcoming production will be held at the Stirling Theatre, Morris Place Innaloo on Wednesday December 7th at 7:30pm with the audition to be held the following Saturday 10th December at 3:00pm.
Cast List
Main Cast
Mavis – Tap Dance Instructor – 25 to 40 yrs old – ex pro-dancer
Mrs Fraser – The Pianist – mature lady of indeterminate age, pessimistic, gruff.
Lynne – 19, nurse, eager to please, reasonable dancer
Dorothy – 30 to 45 - small and birdlike, nervous
Maxine – 40+ - shrewd business woman, born salesperson.
Andy – mid 30’s, self conscious, timid
Geoffrey – mid 40’s, insipid, self conscious (the token male)
Sylvia – mid 40’s, short & bubbly, vivacious, ample curves
Vera – 30 to 50, upper crust, fastidious, bordering on compulsive/obsessive
Rose – mid 40’s, larger sized, jovial non-caucasian woman. (Apologies for the political incorrectness but... we need a large, coloured woman, preferably Jamaican)
Extras
Young woman & Middle aged woman: cameos at beginning of act 1 and again as “Sugar Plum Fairies” towards the end of act two and then as chorus dancers for the finale`.
Nigel: cameo for stage hand (preferably male, though not essentially so)
Synopsis
“Stepping Out” is the story of a small, community Tap Dancing class and their growth as a unit, as dancers and in their own private lives.
As the tale unfolds, we learn of their reasons for joining the group, their hopes and aspirations for the future and the trials and tribulations of their suburban existences.
Invited to take part in a Variety Club night organised by a rival “top notch” dance academy, our girls (and Geoffrey) storm the stage to return home triumphant.
NOTE:
It is a pre-requisite of this production that all actors have at least some dancing experience (not necessarily tap)
Auditionees are required to bring tap or dance shoes (or suitable) to audition.
