Dream Auditions
Fri, 11 Nov 2005, 09:03 amIn February/March (dates still to be confirmed), the Graduate Dramatic Society will be presenting “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at the New Fortune Theatre, UWA Campus, Nedlands.
If youÂ’ve never been to the New Fortune (shame on you!) it is in size and layout a replica of The Fortune Theatre, built in London in 1600 to challenge the recently opened Globe. It is a marvellous place to perform on a warm summer night under the stars, and GRADS have been presenting a Summer Shakespeare here for many years.
The Dream will be directed by Stephen Lee, who recently presented ”What the Butler Saw” for GRADS. He also directed “Twelfth Night” and “Othello” for Class Act Theatre, and “The Taming of the Shrew” at the New Fortune in 2003. His professional production of “A Christmas Carol” for Attic Theatre recently earned him a nomination for Best Director at the Equity Guild Awards. He has directed over twenty five productions of Shakespeare plays, and it feels very embarrassing talking about myself in the third person like this…
If you are interested in auditioning, then please book a slot with Grant Malcolm 0401 216 962. Auditions will be held on Sat/Sun 26/27 of November. You need to prepare (learned if possible) a short speech from Shakespeare (15-20 lines ample). Rehearsals will start in early January.
The Play
A wonderful mix of magic, romance and comedy. This is an enchanting play and deservedly popular. I hope to us the New Fortune space as almost Theatre in the round, the way the original theatres of ShakespeareÂ’s day were used. It is a wonderful opportunity for actors to free themselves from the end-on proscenium arch kind of theatre.
The Parts.
I am very open to playing some roles as female rather than male - particularly the mechanicals. I have no problem with directing a female Bottom ;-), and ages can be a little elastic. There will be a number of smaller roles in the fairy ensemble. Hermia does need to be short, and Helena taller, but otherwise I am open minded.

Hi Stephen,
I didn't think you were directing this production... I remember hearing about someone else doing it, I think.
Is this a new development, or have I just missed the news? :o)
(And I'm usually fond of female Bottoms, too, by the way!)

Will this be happening in Melbourne?
And will any practices be held during the festive season? l will be going back home to south africa in december and arriving in jan.

I'm sorry but this play is happening in WA. I am sure there will be many good Shakespeare plays produced in Melbourne, so good luck with getting cast.
