Standards Poll Results
Fri, 4 Feb 2005, 10:39 amHee hee hee... just checked out the results on this- 6 people claim "nothing impresses them".
Who are these people? Critics? Has Ron Banks infiltrated this site??
I think it would be nteresting now to see WHY nothing impresses these folk. What are their standards, what do they go to see, etc.
NOTE WELL: This is NOT to become a witchhunt- sorry to be a killjoy, guys... but I'm just intrigued about these votes.
Anyone seen attempting to turn this into the aforementioned witchhunt will have a terminal illness personally gift-wrapped from me delivered to their door. No exceptions.

Fri, 4 Feb 2005, 12:02 pmI was one of the people who voted 'nothing impresses me' only because there was no 'rarely impressed.' I am notably a very tough theatre-goer, but I must say that there have been shows which I placed on my top-ten list. Most shows don't impress me not because I don't like anything, but because I nit-pick and get very bored watching performances (unless they're either very good, or I can't work out how they do something). This is mainly because I would rather be working on a show than watching one.
My top ten list:
King Lear at the RSC in Stratford (that's right Shakespeare country) with Nigel Hawthorne - it ended up being his last ever role. (I also don't like Shakespeare, so the show must have been bloody good for me to like it).
The Lion King - I love puppetry, and am generally not a fan of musicals, but I loved this performance.
The Hairy Ape, performed by the Wooster Group when they came to Melbourne in 2001. With Willem Dafoe. (is that how you spell his name?)
Cirque du Soleil's Allegria. It is a true example of a spectacle.
Ronnie Burkett's 'Tinka's New Dress' and 'Provenance' - the best marionette work that I have ever seen.
'Foot Puppetry' by Laura Kibel - an Italian puppeteer who has won awards for her performances.
Lano & Woodley, any and all of their shows. I am a huge fan of theirs. Their last show, performed at the Comedy Festival 2004, was my favourite.
So I really chose 'nothing impresses me' because 'I see much room for improvement' didn't really sum up the way I feel at most shows I see. But some things do impress me - just not a lot of them.
