Dancing

Although this website is most suited for acting and drama studies, i recently found this website while searching through yahoo. My name is Natalie and i'm 15 years old, currently studying yr 10. In the past 2 years, i've started to do dance classes, mostly choreo classes. Now that i've reached yr 10, i'm being pushed by my teachers at school to help me decide on what i would like to do in the future with my life. I love my dancing, and one of the passions i've considerd is to continue with dancing and start performing in productions. But since i have very little experience compared to other dancers who have danced since the age of 7, i feel that my chance in studying dance is little. To any proffesional dancer, i'm askign for help!!!!! Do you have any good advice i might be able to use to be able to pursue dance?

Don't be discouraged by others with seemingly more experience. It's not at all too late for you to pursue dancing if that's what you want.

you had the same dilemma i had. when i was your age. all i ever wanted to do was dance and perform and in highschool thats what i did prior to that i had no training, i was basically what you called an untrained dancer due to so much frustration with being told that i was too old to start (which was 15!) i got discouraged. there is lack of training in oz for girls your age, so i left oz and headed to london when i was 24!!! thats where it really kicked in for me, they have training for all ages and if you want to be a performer its really a good place to train. i studied performing arts, sing, dance and act as i wanted to get into musical theatre. if you are a natural performer it doesnt matter whether the girl next to you started dancing at 6 cause at the end of the day when you go for that audition it all boils down to how well you pick up the routine, performance,style and presence! that is what will seperate you from the rest of the dancers. dont be intimidated when girls tells you that they have trained in all sorts of different dance styles or how long they have been dance training, from my experience in london when you audition they dont look at your cv they look at how well you can move first and trust me there are a lot of dancers that have started way later than me and are doing west end.

my advice to you is not to give up find somewhere to train,( now thats will be the hardest for you, depending on what city you live in) surround yourself with people that have the same dream as you do. Or if your brave enough work hard, save your money and head to london. hope that helps if you have any questions let me know

My daughter was what was considered a "late starter" to dancing when she was 13! She is now 17 and has been dancing for 4 years and most people think she has been dancing since she was little. With determination and hard work you can start at any age. Dont be discouraged, find a dance school that is friendly and about having fun and go for it!

I even went back to dancing at the age of 48 and performed in some dance concerts tap dancing - its never too late!

look it honestly doesnt matter what age you start, passion is what counts, i hadnt done any dancing or singing and only done a few highschool drama classes before i decided to go to stage school at 18, in two years i built up enough confidence to pack everything up and head to london, (thats where im writing from!!!) and there are many others just like me. dont be fooled its hard work but if you look into your heart and it tells you your a dancer then dance! dont let anyone stand in your way... goodluck
