A beautiful scheming woman, dark secrets from the past, trust and deception, blackmail, moral corruption, a philandering dandy, insider trading, naive innocents, and all set amidst the aristocratic genteel society of late-nineteenth century England. This is the setting for Oscar Wilde's "An Ideal Husband" - a play which explores human frailty, social hypocrisy and true friendship.

The dialogue may be light and humerous with all the English drawing room wit and elegance that attributes to Wilde, but the message about human weakness, morality, tolerance and love is powerful, and has much to say to us today as it did when it was written. The social manners are perhaps unfamiliar to us but the underlying human character traits recognisable.

Is there such a thing as an 'ideal' husband - or wife? Can any of us claim perfection??
