New Fortune
Thu, 5 Feb 2004, 09:11 amI just want to add my own shameless plug for GRADS' production of The Tempest.
New Fortune Theatre, University of Western Australia.
17-21 Feb and 24-28 Feb, 8pm.
Bookings, 9277 5577
$15, $12 concessions.
There are still a lot of people out there who've hardly even heard of this venue, let alone seen a production there.
The New Fortune is one of Perth's hidden jewels, and almost never used other than for GRADS Summer season.
Built in 1964, occupying the central court of the Arts Building, this venue is a reproduction of the precise dimensions of London's original Fortune Theatre which was built in 1600 by carpenter Peter Street who had completed Shakespeare's Globe Theatre the previous year.
This is the only accurate Elizabethan-style performance space in the Southern Hemisphere, and has a wonderful atmosphere.
With its huge thrust stage newly refurbished, audience "pit", surrounding galleries and 3-storey backdrop structure, the place itself is a "must experience" quite apart from the fact that we're mounting a damn fine Shakespeare show in there.
Would you go to London and not spend a fortune to experience the new "Globe"? Well spend a relative pittance for much the same buzz right here in your home town.
Hope to see lots of you there,
Jonno. GRADS Vice-President.
Vested interest confessed.
