where can i go for free or cheap theatre?
Fri, 9 Jan 2004, 03:03 pmHi there. I have never really been much into going to the theatre but i would really like to start going. I would like to go to watch some amateur productions that are either free or pretty cheap and in the south eastern suburbs of melbourne. Can anyone give me any tips of where i can go or even a website that i could check out for more info? It would be much appreciated! Please let me know by email jen6381@hotmail.com.

Hi Jennie,
You are in for a wonderful time! The world of amateur theatre can be filled with many enjoyable experiences.
"Amateur" is not an indication of the standard of the performances to be achieved. The amateur theatre can call on enormous resources for behind-the-scenes work that are out of the reach of many professional theatre companies, merely because of the number of volunteers involved.
Even so, there are many costs associated with staging a play and many more for a musical. Just to touch on a few, there are things like: royalties; script/score hire; rehearsal & performance venue hire; sets; costumes; make-up; lighting & sound rigs; transport; advertising and administration; to name just a few. When all these costs are added up then divided by the number of "bums on seats", the price of a full ticket can be anywhere between $10 and $30 for an amateur production.
As for a source of information... Ummm! Scouring the Internet for websites like this is probably your best bet. Unfortunately the local (community) newspapers don't seem to support amateur theatre. ['Leader Community Newspapers' and 'Fairfax Press', please take note!] Whilst there are many productions, by many theatre companies, during the year, finding them in a "What's on" in your local paper is very difficult indeed.
