G'day again Dave. I've found another answer for you.

Yes, you were right, "We Are Family" was first produced by Deckchair in 2001, and toured in 2002.

As I noted before, the Guild defers to Stages, the playwrights arm of the Writer's Guild, to choose finalists and judge this award. I've since discovered that Stages use the same criteria as the Australia Council as to what qualifies as a 'new work'. Basically, any significant rewrite that changes the structure of the play will allow it to be seen as a new work. The 2002 version was enough changed from the original to pass this test. A similar situation would be Deckchair's production of 'Prayer To An Iron God" this year....I saw an original production in 1999, with a cast of about 8. There were significant changes to the script in a production in 2001, and then by 2003 the play was reworked to suit a cast of 4...this qualifies it as another 'new work', both for OzCouncil funding criteria and for Equity Guild nomination.

Hope things are cooking in Leonora.

Cheers,
Craig
