THEATRE AWARDS NOMINEES ANNOUNCED.

The nominees in six core categories for the 4th Annual I.F.A.C./Equity Guild Awards have been announced. The six categories include: Best Actor – Female, Best Actor – Male, Best Newcomer, Best Director, Best Production and Best New Play.

“2003 has proven to be a record year for the Awards in terms of the number of productions submitted for final assessment” President of the Equity Benevolent Guild Jay Walsh said.

Mr Walsh said “Such a result means that the Awards have an increasing importance for the WA theatre industry as a major promotional event. It has always been the intention that the awards would become performing arts awards, and with this growing industry recognition and an audience increase of 32% in 3 years, the inclusion of other performing arts categories may happen sooner rather than later”.

A list of all nominees in each category is attached.

All finalists and eventual winners will be announced by AFI Award Winner Ms Rachel Blake (Lantana, Wildside), and the Minister for Culture and the Arts the Hon. Sheila McHale MLA at the I.F.A.C./Equity Guild Awards presentation ceremony. The ceremony will again be held at the art deco restored Mt Lawley Bowling Club on Saturday 15th November. Re: IFAC/ Equity Guild Awards - complete list of nominees

Is it just me, or has every single actor and every single actress in every single play just been "carpet-bomb" nominated?

A bit boring, nay?

Re: IFAC/ Equity Guild Awards - complete list of nominees

No, that is not the case at all. Rather than being simply announcing the short lists for the awards, Craig has very kindly posted all of the nominees this year. Surely by having a large field it indicates that the standard of work was uniformly high.

The judges are asked to make four choices in each category and then the choose their preferred option. Usually the public dont get to hear all the nominees, just the short listed ones. This way, everyone knows who was in the running from the beginning. It's just good pr.

Thank you Craig for taking the time to put the postings up in the first place and congratulations to all of the nominees. As one of the judges, I know that the decisions this year were not at all easy.

Re: IFAC/ Equity Guild Awards - complete list of nominees

Couple of questions...

What time period are the shows from?

What is a newcomer?

And who are the judges?

Thanks

Not certain of the exact month that nominations had to be submitted by...August?. Anyway, the time period is the year covering the period since whenever nominations were finalised last year. :-)

> What is a newcomer?

Remembering that to be nominated, you must be a member of WA Actors Equity. Therefore there may be occasions when somebody has actually been acting for some time, but is only this year recognised as an Equity member and therefore is a professional newcomer. For a production to be nominated, it must have included Equity members.

('Professional' is one of those words you can obviously argue about, however the Tax office and the DSS recognise Equity membership as automatically conferring professional status, so that's the definition for this purpose. Also the awards are organised by the Equity Guild so their definitions are the ones that count.)

Off the top of my head, and apologies to anyone I've missed, Kerri Hilton, Jenni Cohen, Ivan King (retired), Sarah McNeil (retired) were judges last year. This year (ie next year's awards) Rita Clarke and Gerald Hitchcock are incoming judges.
I know they all make a point of seeing as much as possible, and between all of them they probably see everything - but there's no harm in making sure they go on your invites list for your next production, if you want to be considered.

And yes, I got the nominations list off a press release from Guild Secretary Steve Shaw, and thought it was well worth broadcasting the fact that good work is happening in this town, regardless of how poorly our media- and self-images continue to paint us. There will be a shortlist of finalists and the eventual winners announced on the night, but the reason this list I posted seems like everybody's getting a look-in is precisely because: everybody on that list has been recognised enough to score a nomination. Good work, and good luck!

Cheers
Craig

Just amending to my above responses;

the productions are chosen from those that happen July-June (ie: a tax year).

Yes, I included all the judges in the previous post.

Sorry it's taken a while to respond; the Awards have just happened, and the results have just been posted (see that thread for details).

From ALL the eligible productions submitted last year, 55 nominees were selected to 'bomb the carpet', from which 30 were chosen as finalists, eventually coming down to 6 winners (plus the peer-nominated Guild Award and Stage Manager's Award).

So it was just you. Hope you're no longer so bored...and far less casual in your observations.

Cheers
Craig
