EFFIEÂ’S TO FIND NEW HOME

After 13 years at the Brisbane Hotel in Northbridge, the Effie Crump Theatre will leave to try to find a new home.

EffieÂ’s Chairman, Mr Kieran Kinsella, said that imminent renovation work planned by the hotelÂ’s new owners would make it an inappropriate venue for theatre performances.

The current season of ‘Two Way Mirror’ by Arthur Miller would run as scheduled from August 7 to 30. After that date the theatre would go into recess in the hope of finding a new venue and reopening next year.

“The Board has decided this is the best course to take to avoid incurring losses for the rest of the year,” Mr Kinsella said.

“The hotel is closed and looks deserted, particularly at night, which has made it difficult to sell seats and caused a drop in audience numbers. The renovations due to start on September 1 will make access to the upstairs venue difficult, particularly for elderly people or those with disabilities.

“Patrons can no longer dine at the hotel before the show, and the bar service is in doubt.

“We have started talks with the Town of Vincent in the hope that we can find another venue not too far away. Perth MLA John Hyde, a long-time patron and supporter, has also agreed to help.”

Mr Kinsella said that ArtsWA had supported the decision to go into recess. Three shows planned for the rest of the year – ‘The Big Picture’ by Jennifer Compton, Henry Szeps’ new one-man show ‘Why Kids?’ and Hellie Turner’s ‘Bench’ – would be cancelled, and subscribers offered a refund.

EffieÂ’s was established in June 1990 and was one of the few theatre companies in Perth to offer at least six productions a year, Mr Kinsella said.

“In that time the theatre has presented about 90 shows – classical and modern, musicals, revues, cabarets and one-person performances. The company has toured to more than 30 venues throughout WA and has staged many school productions.

“Effie’s has developed a loyal and appreciative audience, and in 2001 and 2002 was the major winner at the IFAC/Equity Guild Awards.

“It’s sad to have to bring the curtain down like this, but we hope next year will be a new beginning for Effie’s in a new venue.”
