The Performing Arts in Australia
Tue, 20 May 2003, 08:21 amHi
I'm doing a research assignment at the moment about how the performing arts in Australia compare to the rest of the world and how well we are know for it and I was wondering if there are any good places to start looking for information. I have gathered basic information but any places you can think of or information you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
Thankyou
Erin

Re: The Performing Arts in Australia
have you tried asking at Australia's drama schools (WAAPA, VCA & NIDA)? I would think being the top training facilities, they would have some idea of our standards/innovativeness/capacity as a nation. How about also asking at the offices of your state's art festival (who import many acts as well as locals), or some of the leading professional theatre companies?
Hope this gives you a start.

Re: The Performing Arts in Australia
Look at "Entertaining Australia. The Performing Arts as Cultural History" Edited by Katherine Brisbane (1991 Currency Press) - a bit hard to come by, but what you are looking for I think.
For an even more historical perspective "Australia On the Popular Stage 1829-1929" by Margaret Williams (1983 Oxford Uni Press)
Sorry - can usually find more references than that...not sure exactly what angle you are looking at. Good luck.

Re: The Performing Arts in Australia
Erin pondered:
"How the performing arts in Australia compare to the rest of the world and how well we are known for it?"
Just a thought, but Hugh Jackman is currently one of Hollywood's hottest stars, on top of the world (heh, had to squeeze that in), able to pick and choose between Broadway musicals and movie blockbusters. His name and face are seemingly everywhere - newspapers, magazines, Internet. How many of those mention that he got his training in a small but prestigious institution in the most isolated capital city in the world?
I don't know the answer, but it might be a contemporary angle to look at. Especially considering Hugh's about to open (I think) in an Aussie musical on Broadway (the first?) In the context of your assignment, it will be very interesting to see how the rest of the world receives the show...
My $0.02.
