The Method Studio, Perth

For many years the London-based Method Studio has been offering courses to train professional actors, based on the “method” techniques described by Stanislavski and developed by (among others) Lee Strasberg in New York. Stephen Lee, who has taught at the Studio for eight years, has now been authorised to open a school in Perth affiliated to the London original.

So what is Method?

Despite what many people seem to think, method does not involve lots of inaudible mumbling of lines. Basically it is just a simple and common sense set of techniques designed to increase the truth and believability of an actorÂ’s performance by drawing on his our her own experiences. For over a century it has been the basis of almost all acting training.

Just another set of classes then?

Initially the Method Studio will start with only a few classes, but our intention is to build up a series of courses that will enable actors (just as in London) to put together their own programme of work: from a single class or part-time commitment through to an intensive course of study. We can also offer actors who study with us a Fast Track entry to the London parent, avoiding the usual interview and selection process.

Who is all this aimed at?

All actors should be continually learning. John Milson (I hope he wonÂ’t mind my quoting him here) at the Bunbury Festival this year , urged performers to take classes to sharpen their skills. All we ask is that people are prepared to work seriously and with commitment. Otherwise we welcome both the newcomers and more experienced actors.

Who is Stephen Lee?

Stephen has been in Perth just under three months now. Anyone at Bunbury, or the State Drama Festival, will have seen him lurking in dark corners. He has been a professional actor and director for over twenty years, appearing both on stage and television (including a lead role in The Bill). He has taught not only at the Method Studio, but also at Lee Strasberg and Italia Conti., specialising in Shakespeare and Classical theatre. Stephen has directed a vast range of stage work, including at the LOST Theatre in Fulham (where he worked with a young Ralph Fiennes). He has taught on the American Intern Exchange Program, and worked for some years with a professional improvised theatre group.

Interested?

If you are interested in any of the above, and would like an idea of what you might be letting yourself in for, then we are running two short (two week) introductory classes in December.

Saturday 7th and 14th December 10.00 am – 1.00 pm

ACTING THROUGH IMPROVISATION

Scared of Improvised work, or just love it? Either way this course is an excellent introduction to the fundamentals of acting. Not just how to relax and feel comfortable with off-script work, but learn just HOW scenes work dramatically. This can really improve your acting in script work too.

Saturday 7th and 14th December 2.00 pm – 5.00 pm

SHAKESPEARE

Stephen has worked extensively both as an actor and director of Shakespeare. This course aims to make Shakespeare much more approachable, while still covering the essentials of language, verse speaking and Elizabethan world and conventions. Both those with little or great experience of the Bard should find something here to interest them.

And how much is all this?

Each two week introductory course (six hours total) will cost just $50. If you wish to take both sets of classes then the total is $90 for the two. Classes will be held at the Blue Room Theatre in Northbridge. If you wish to book, or find out more information, then just ring: 9459 4313 or e-mail stephen.lee@tpg.com.au
