okay, maybe someone here could help me...
i am wanting to produce a play early to mid next year written by a Canadian writer. Now i have been in contact with her and as she doesn't have an agent or a set fee for independant companies, she has asked me to name my price...
i just want to know what the standard in Perth is!
it is in two-acts and never been performed here (well, once in Wagga Wagga but that doesn't count...). We are an independant company and need to know asap as funding rounds are finishing soon...
have been in contact with Australian writers guild and they sent me here....
just want some advice!
that would be fabbo

Hi Georgia,

For a pro performance of a well known playwrights work, *generally* 10%+ of the gross box office is expected. BUT, given this writer is seemingly not so interested in the fiscal side of things, I would suggest a win-win solution -

Namely; she is obviously very interested to see how the work goes over here, yes? If so, offer her a nominal percentage, say 1-3% of gross (or to charity as El suggested) + a video of the production so she can see it being performed. Not as good as being there but it will go a long way for her to be able to refine her current and later work. Not to mention the thrill of being able to show her colleagues her work as presented in "The Australian Idiom!" - just make sure the vid's half decent!! ;o)

And I think most writers, no matter how 'jaded', are mostly interested in how the play works! I have first hand experience with the jaded kind of writer, so I know its pretty true! :o)

Just my 2 cents, Thou saucy clay-brained flax-wench! (say, this insult button is pretty cool!)
