SECRETS OF MAKING A NO/ LOW BUDGET FEATURE FILM

August 17 + 18 2002

PAC / AWG WEEKEND COURSE ON MICRO-BUDGET FEATURES

PAC Screen Workshops is pleased to present in association with the Australian Writers' Guild a weekend course for writers, directors & filmmakers exploring the ins and outs of making a micro-budget feature film. Learn from industry professionals and those who have already done it. This seminar will give you information, trade secrets and hopefully the encouragement you'll need to get your film off the page and rolling without the need to take out a second mortgage on your house! 'If they can do it, so can you!' - Part of the weekend will include graduates of PAC Screen Workshops sharing their experiences of making their independent feature films on the 'smell of an oily rag'. Industry professionals will explore factors vital to the success of this most challenging of ventures - making your movie on limited resources.

The weekend will cover the followiing:

A good story idea is always the foundation of any successful project but when you have limited or no resources it is absolutely critical

Limitations that micro-budgets place on the story you can tell. What you can and can't do with no money.

Characterisation - the need to focus on character based drama increases.

Scirpt Editing - skillful editing early on can save massive headaches later that can cripple a project.

Workshopping of your script with actors can enable vital rewrites to be achieved with greater ease.

Assembling a team - choose with care! How to ask for big favours or The art of Brown Nosing.

Cast and crew - how and where to find them. How to look after them once you have them.

Equipment, time and money - what you can do without and what you can't.

Rehearsals and working with actors - prima donnas need not apply.

Production and problem solving. Basic skills vital for every filmmaker.

Editing - a whole new world.

Going public - who to tell what.

Festivals and distributors.

Launching a company and finding finance.

Tutors:

Several industry professionals will tutor this weekend including writer / director Melanie Rodriga who recently co-produced and directed the low budget feature "Teesh & Trude" and independent producer and script editor Victor Gentile who has worked on hundreds of low budget productions over the past 22 years. In 2000, Perth actor/writer/director Emma Green made a 96 minute feature without any investment. "Leadfoot", shot entirely in Perth with a local cast has now been entered into several international festivals. The Shooting Pool, the company Emma formed is currently developing its next film "The Trap". Also in 2000 (amazing what a new millenium inspires) filmmaker Courtney Waller co-wrote, produced and directed a 90 minute feature "Rehab" on a budget of only $15,000. Both will share how they did it. PAC Screen Workshop co-ordinator and casting director Annie Murtagh-Monks will explore the issues surrounding casting this type of project and cast + crew agreements.

The seminar will take place over 2 days: Saturday & Sunday August 17 & 18 at the

Australian Writers Guild, 196 Oxford St Leederville from 9.30am to 5pm both days.

Numbers strictly limited so a selection process may apply. For further details phone 9384 4604 or check out PAC Screen Workshops' website: www.screenworkshop.iinet.net.au
