PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

Music Theatre at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA@ECU) is one of the most hotly contended courses in Australia. It's the best of its kind in Australia and enjoys considerable fame from its graduates who go on to grace national and international stages, and film and television screens.

Naturally entry for the course is competitive, with only 18 students accepted each year from auditions held nationally. Each candidate must satisfy the audition panel as to his/her potential in the three strands of Singing, Acting, and Dance. Auditioning by its nature can be a harrowing prospect for some, and it'ss not unusual for successful applicants to have auditioned several times before being accepted.

So, what preparation can best arm you for an audition?

WAAPA Music Theatre staff - those who actually hold the auditions - have now, for the first time, devised a Masterclass to help demystify the audition process, in answer to many requests.

Participants (lower age limit of 17 years) will be familiarised with accepted audition procedure for music theatre generally (ie choice and length of material, audition etiquette, good presentation, dealing with nerves etc), as well as gaining an understanding of what WAAPA^Á’s course entails and the standard required for entry. Teachers are welcome to enrol.

The Masterclasses will be conducted in Perth, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide in July 2002. Demand will be high and interested parties will need to respond well before the 14 June deadline.

The three-hour session will be primarily practical and will include mock auditions for singing, acting, and dance, covering all audition formats from 'cattle-call' to 'callback'. Participants will have the opportunity to volunteer themselves as 'auditionees', or to observe, playing the role of
'auditioner'. Those who take part in the Masterclass will not be critiqued on their talent or potential suitability for the course but on the preparedness and appropriateness of their auditioning.

The Masterclass is neither a prerequisite, nor a guarantee for a place in the course but will prepare applicants, and give them the opportunity to
present themselves well at the auditions held in November or at any auditions they may attend.

The cost of the Masterclass is $75, plus GST.
