New Drama School
Tue, 23 Apr 2002, 02:37 pmDoes Perth need another full time Drama course? I am currently teaching at the Method Studio in London, but will be moving to WA in August. I am currently engaged in negotiations to open an Australian branch of the Studio in Perth. This would offer courses in Basic Acting, Shakespeare, Classical Scene Study, Improvisation, Speech and Movement, just as in London. Students would be able to build an entire programme of classes or merely focus on one or two areas. We could also offer students of the school preferential status if they wished to continue their studies in London.
The Method Studio, originally springing from the teachings of Lee Strasberg, aims to give its students a thorough grounding in all aspects of drama. Although chiefly aimed at the post High School 18 - 22 age group, we are always willing to offer places to older or more experienced students. The great advantage of our scheduling is its flexibility, allowing students to put together an intensive three months "cram" course, or spread the same studies over a year. A large number of our ex students are currently working on stage and screen both in England and America.
And who am I? My name is Stephen Lee. I am London born, and worked for many years as a professional actor on stage and television. Though I still occasionally work in this capacity, for the last fifteen years I have been focussing on teaching, and have worked at Lee Strasberg Studio, Italia Conti, and for nearly ten years at the Method Studio. I have also worked extensively as a classical actor and director in London including recent work in the West End and Fringe. At the Method Studio I have worked closely with teachers who studied under Strasberg and Meisner.
And the point of this posting? When I first mentioned on this board in January the possibility of coming to Perth, I had a number of very friendly and helpful replies. I have read and followed the topics discussed here with great interest. So now I would like to ask the WA acting community whether people feel that there is a need for this kind of school in Perth, whether there is a niche for us to fill, between the full time studies offered at WAAPA or the individual courses I have seen on this very page. Any advice, thoughts or input would be gratefully received.

Re: New Drama School
Hello Stephen
My Name's Samantha and i am 17 nearly 18 years old. I have been studying Performing arts for nearly 10 years and have just recentley graduated form John Curtin College of the Arts which is a specialist school in WA. Since i have been out of school i have realised how much Perth lacks in the Arts areas. Although we have WAAPA, they usually don't take students straight out of school as they like them to have had more life experience and Arts experience. This leaves people like myself with very little oppurtunity in the Arts area because there are hardly any other well known performing institutes in the state.
I think your idea of bringing the Method studion to Perth is a great idea and know of many willing students that are looking for an oppurtunity just like it to help broaden their performance/ theatre experience.
I know that this state need something just like what you are offering and would be greatly appreciated.
Feel free to contact me with any questions.
I look forward to hearing more development from you.

Re: New Drama School
Hello Stephen
For what it's worth, I think it is a great idea!
We do have a large number of very enthusiastic and eager young actors, who for one reason or another , are not attending WAAPA. Training for people of all ages is an excellent idea and it always helps to be able to continue that training, no matter how old you are.
High school students who do the drama /drama studies courses at school can , by virtue of the course itself, only be taught the essentials.
If people want to brush up on their skills, learn new skills or indeed simply keep up to date with other people, then I would suggest that your school sounds like an excellent idea.
I wish you all the very best of luck. You certainly sound as though you have the background and the experience to run a wonderful school.

Re: New Drama School
I too am going to Lee Starberg but in W. Hollywood LA I think if you look at the Actor per Capita in Australia Sydney is a better place to start, not only could you open a school you could teach at the various schools already here to understand your marketplace, before venturing out getting a lease etc.... shop before you buy.
