I heard some very sad and serious news recently from a local theatre company.

I don't think it is my position to post it here, particularly as i understand the company concerned have delayed making the information public so as not to upset some members.

But i wish they'd hurry up and do so! I'm sure they'd garner a great deal of support from visitors to this site.

So... *anonymous people* are you able to tell us any news as yet?

Cheers
Grant

RE: Serious news

Why bother posting if you can't tell us anything? Either someone major has died or the company's closing down - that's the impression I get from your post

RE: Serious news

Grant posted to encourage the group affected to get a posting up.

As I understand they are desperately trying to contact someone greatly affected so that they don't hear about it online.

Nobody is closing. Nobody has died.

RE: Serious news

So now you've got the mind racing... someone's injured? In financial trouble? Won the lottery? Been shafted by a company? See what you've started?

Then tell us!

RE: Serious news

I do not think it untoward to inform people that Blak Yak Theatre dodged a bullet this week. Blak Yak Theatre are the resident theatre group in the City of Gosnells Don Russell Performing Arts Centre in Thornlie. Recently, the Gosnells City Council transferred management of the Centre to an independent contracter, Starlight Theatre Lighting Management. Due to an unfortunate series of misunderstandings and miscommunications, Starlight Theatre Lighting Management asked Blak Yak to vacate the Don Russelm Performing Arts Centre.

I did not want to make any blanket statements about the situation until an opportunity for negotiation had been used. This is the same reason why I did not want to panic our members, without first trying to reach an agreement with Starlight Theatre Lighting Management.

I am happy to report that a meeting was held, and despite concerns being expressed on both sides, an amicable agreement was reached. For the time being, Blak Yak Theatre will continue to operate in the Don Russell Performing Arts Centre.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank Grant for his help and to thank everyone else who expressed their concern and support.

Jarrod Buttery,
Presieent,
Blak Yak Theatre.

Geez, I have no idea, I've been kind of busy the past week or so. Jeff? Grant? Anyone want to field this one?

Who's serving who?

I'm heartened to hear that Blak Yak have been granted something of a reprieve. Although i must say i'm disturbed by the manner in which the whole matter appears to have been dealt with.

DRPAC belongs to the community not Starlight. They have a responsibility to manage that resource so that it is available to the community and that includes the resident community theatre company. The onus should be on the management company to reach a satisfactory agreement with your company, not vice versa.

hehe... so, i'll bet you're glad i wasn't there during negotiations ;)

It may well pay to check Gosnells' business and strategic plans. I know that the City of Canning includes a statement to the effect that halls are provided for the private and social use of the community and that commercial usage is secondary to this.

If Gosnells has a similar statement, it would be interesting to survey the percentage of usage at DRPAC that is non-commercial.

Why the sudden change of heart from Starlight management?

Are Starligit only deigning to keep you there so that they can present adequate occupancy figures to council? How long before they have enough commercial hirers that they don't need you in there any more?

mmmm..... :/
